Electric Soul Show - 18th April 2009 - www.icrfm.co.uk - Ipswich Town, England

*The Electric Soul Show is now on air - "Live" every SUNDAY - BETWEEN 10:00AM TO 12 NOON - English Time* Please check the time/s for your country listening times within the white bar or strip on this website!

I used to say another Wednesday, another Electric Soul Show. Now that day belongs to Sundays. Not that I’m not complaining mind you. Sundays suit me fine to be honest.

In fact I stated this weeks show of with a beauty. The track in question was called “Unpredictable” by Jamie Foxx (*Released in 2006 from the album called “Unpredictable”). It had one of the best tracks on the album in my opinion. A really smoothing sounding track which features the faint sound of a trumpet in the background, and some soothing strings which makes this track sound extra sweet, together with simple drum pattern and bass line. Nothing fancy here mind you, but it puts you in the chill mood at the very worst. Jamie’s voice matches this song perfectly. In fact his voice was made for this song. He is helped along by an backing singing that adds weight to the song to be fair. From some research for this track it seemed as if Jamie sampled and obscure Herbie Hancock track to have been able t omake “Vip”. So that where the faint like Jazz Trumpet sound in the background came from did it? Please have a listen to the track in question by clicking on the link below.

Saying Soulful another great track up for my listeners, and it comes from the group called The Chestnut Brothers, based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The track is called “Come to me” by the Chestnut Brothers (released in 2008 from the album called “Retro Soul”). One of the best cuts from that album in my opinion. Pure vocal talent on this track from both of the brothers,(who are Al and Ty) who form the Chestnut Brothers. Simple, simple drum pattern; the same goes for the bass line. The keyboards employed here help set the scene. But it’s those vocals from Al and Ty that make this tune sound extra sweet. Please have a listen to this track if you love Soul music. Just click on the link below.

Well, two tracks in a row in regards to Soul music from me today so far in the show. You can't get better than that can you? Well yes you can because I'm going to drop another one. Here is another great track from me to you within the Soul music gender. Its called “Whatever you want” by Tony, Toni, Tone (Released in 1992 from the album called “The Revival”). Not as slow as the Chestnuts brother track before this one. But just as soulful, but this time with a touch of funk thrown in for good measure, and its all to do with the bass line. Starts of with us hearing the distance sound of acoustic guitar in the background, then all of a sudden all the instruments come together. Bass line, drumbeat, keyboards, guitar and then finally the lead vocals of Raphael Saddiq. Wow is all I can say. This is just a great single, even better then the two that I have played previously. The chorus of this single is great, you’ll find yourself singing to it at times when you hear this. One of the big tracks of Tony, Toni, Tone without doubt; please have a listen to the track to see why.

I completely changed the script around with my next track. Why not play some Soul and jazzy House music for my listeners I thought? Mix it up a bit has always been my motto when it comes to music. On that thought I dropped this for my listeners. “Chill” by The Urban Knights (The Booker T Mix) (Released in 1995). Wow, is this good or what? This still sounds fresh as when it was released in 1995.Originally an out and out Jazz tune when it was put together first in 1995. However, a copy reached the Uk House and Garage man at the time called Booker T, and what he bought out was something extra special. This still could be dropped today in fact. Nice and bumpy, and as the summer months are fast approaching this would go down a treat in any Dj’s set. Love his approach to this. He allows for the Trumpet soloing to continue way long into this track. However, it his approach that allows for that lovely 4 chord structure pattern to works its way throughout the song, together with that lovely Trumpet riff and Keyboard that he also throws down that makes this song so nice. Please have a listen to this Jazz Funk style House track that is a killer. Please have a listen to this tune. Remember if you are after this tune, it’s the Booker T version of the track that you want.

Staying Jazzy, staying soulful here within the realms of House music was another beauty for my listeners. This one is called “Penetration” by Mood 2 Mood, from the Usa (Released in 1992), and just wants to make turn up the Radio. Starts of so jazzy, and ambient like, then with the soft jazz like chords and the light bass line implied at first. Then all we get the full force as all the instruments are let go at once at us. The drum and bass line are just right not too fast and yet not too slow, but it’s the that Jazz like riff in the background that comes in and out the track every so often is what sets this track apart; and the use of the sampled and looped vocals which go like this - “I want you to be apart of my life”, which as the song progresses is shorten to just to “apart of my life”. A really classy track from one the big names in Soulful House and Garage music. Many people who get to listen to this track want more of it. Have a listen to it yourself by click on the link below.

The next track is a classic if you are a lover of Soulful House music from back in the day (from the early 1990’s to be precise?). The track in question is this “I can’t get no sleep” by The Masters at Work (The Mk Mix) (Released in 1993, Usa). Originally it was done by the duo known within House and Garage music as The Masters at Work, who at this time were fast becoming the new superstars of House music. There are so many mixes of this single at the time. I believe there could be at least 6 mixes of this track when it originally first came out. There is a Soul music mix of the same track that even Soul music purist of today love with a passion; but if you’re a House music man this is the mix that you should be heading for. It starts of with a simple four to the floor beat, which is gradually interspersed with other sounds such as a number of looped vocal samples, jangerly sounding piano chords and sweet strings that come in and out the song, but still make it a pleasure to listen to.

Mark “Mk” Kinchen, Usa is still to this day talked about highly about when it comes to remixing or making Soulful or Funky House music. His remixing work is greatly admired and lovingly looked back at. Please have a listen to this mix that he did a really great tune. I really love this tune myself

Well with all that Soulful House and Garage music being played. I nearly missed this part of the show. Yeap you’ve guessed it. It was time for me to play the Rare Groove selection part 1 of the show. For those of you that listen in each week I need not say anything more. For those of you that are new to this well. Each week I play two sections of the Rare Groove selection. 3 songs in each part. These songs are either bonafide rare grooves, or songs that people have simply forgotten about. (However, if you want to know what was played in this part of the show you will have to listen to the show!)

Well as the last throes of the last song within the Rare Groove selection was finishing I had already made up my mind in what my next tune would be to play for my listeners. In fact I have recently played this tune on the show in last weeks show. The track is called “If I” by Justin Timberlake featuring TI (real name - Clifford Joseph Harris Jr) (Released in 2009). This single features a very infectious funky bass line and drum pattern to start the track off together with Justin and TI singing the songs main hook line. It works by just doing that. T.I when asked to come up with the rapping for the song comes correct and delivers. Justin when doing the singing part of the song sounds like Prince. Yes he sounds like the Purple one (*Prince!). I love this single. If dropped this on the dance floor it would get most people on it. Its not complicated, in fact its dance friendly. Towards the end of the song we even hear T.I singing himself. Please give yourself a chance if you haven’t heard this song before. Just click on the link provided below to hear the song in full.

The next tune that I decided on play was called "Take of the blues" from the group known as Foreign Exchange (Released in 2008,from the album called "Leave it all behind" Usa), which will surprise many on hearing it, as it’s a really good Rn'b cut from a steadfast Hip Hop group. Once again it has that slow to mid tempo groove about it. But I got to say I just love the guest singer’s voice on this who is Darien Brockington.

The right man for the right song I think. He is helped along by some really good backing vocals on this track. But I think the inclusion of a horn section within the song at around 2 minutes and seven seconds into the tune is a mark of genius. Already within the Usa they have gained a lot of interest over this song already, and I have to say the album to be fair. Don’t just take my word for it. Have a listen to the tune yourselves by clicking on the link its self.

Here is a tune from an artist that over the last 2 years I have been supporting via my Radio show. Here name is L Michele, from New York, USA, and the track called "You Should be here" (Released 2007) from her that I played for my listeners is more a more upto date uptake on the current Rn’b sound that is around these days. A nice hiphop driven beat and groove that works for L Michele. She can certainly sing there is no question about that. She is helped on this single with equally good backing vocalists that help her to soar. I think this single would work well in a good Rn’b type club. Please give this a listen. Please click on the link below which sees her performing this song live.

Oppps I’m always guilty if this because as I looked up at the clock again I noticed that time was racing away from me. In fact I’d better play The Rare Groove Selection - Part 2 of the show now so that wouldn’t run out of time to doing so. It’s that part of the show whereby I play 3 forgotten, or bonafide Rare grooves to my listeners. However, if you want to know what I played I’m afraid you will have to listen into the show. I keep saying this but you don't I?

Directly after playing the last Rare Groove selection track I decided on playing this – “Makes you happy” by Novel (Released in 2009 from the album called “The Audiobiography”). Yes we are back to the Soulful side of Rn’b music once again.

I like this single. It’s got that groove that the famed Rn’b singer Eric Benet or Joe is famed for having, or made a name around. I have been playing this track regularly now within the last month. But for those that missed it here it is again for you to hear again. Novel is a Rapper, Singer, Songwriter and producer all in one we are told. The track in question is called “Makes you happy”(released in 2009 – to be released on the coming album called “Autobiography”). Reminds me slightly of Raheem Devaughn as well, or something that he would release if it were also to feature a RAP on his release. You know what I mean? A big sounding bass line and Drum pattern on this tune, which is sweetened by good vocals from Novel on this track. Also soulful keyboards give this track a mellow edge as well. Novel is helped on this track by some underrated background vocals as well. As I mentioned before earlier on within this page that the vibe of Soul music either directly or indirectly is really making its mark on release within the Rn’b and Hip Hop music world for 2009. Lets hope it continues. Please have a listen to the tune below by clicking on the link and hearing the tune in full.

Another tune in which I have been playing heavily within the last month and one that has truly impressed me has been - Slakah the Beatchild featuring Drake track called “Bad meaning good” (released in 2008 on the album called “Soul Movement volume 1) I have only just picked up this album to be honest? All I have to say about this track is that it is really lovely. A real nice track, in which I enjoyed playing from start to finish. First of all it sounds so much like a summer track. I love the simple acoustic guitar chord strums employed by the Slakah the Beatchild. What they say about giving less to appear that you are giving more is true. I love the bass line on and the drum pattern that just touches on giving you a Hip-hop feel, but it is heavily influenced by funk. The whole vibe on the song though is heavily influenced by Soul Music. I love Slakah voice (It reminds me slightly of Dwele!) However it’s prefect on this tune, as is the rap provided by Drake. Drake’s rap doesn’t over power the tune; it allows the tune to breath and have another musical option. I’m going to check out the album if this is anything to go buy in regards to hearing this tune. Wow this is good. Please have a listen to the track yourself by clicking on the track yourself below.

Time has finally had caught up with me. In fact I only had time for one last tune; and I have to say what a beauty it is. The track is called “Call me” by Shei Atkins (Released in 2005 from the album called “The Lite Mae Show”). Starts of with a simple sounding acoustic sounding guitar. It is then it is added with a driven hiphop beat together with some nice keyboard chord changes that truly makes this a tune something your ears instantly you pick up on. The lyrics on this track mean something and are wonderfully sung by Shei Atkins. Shei is a gospel artist, and it goes to show how strong in depth the music is when you have talent like Shei around and yet still haven’t made the big time. It’s my favourite track from her. It’s a great way to end the show on. I hope that you have liked the show this week. Please tell your friends about it. Please click on the track below which will take you to her website.

Electric Soul Show - 12th April 2009 - www.icrfm.co.uk - Ipswich Town, England

*Please note that the Electric Soul Show takes place every Sunday between 10am to 12 noon (English time) Please check white strip or board for your own countries times in regards to the show*

Well it was a Easter Sunday this week, and I had decided a few days beforehand to pull out all the stop to try and make this show a special one. The weather was already great for the start of the day. Nice and sunny and hardly any wind at all as I was driving in towards the Radio studio.

The first track that I played on this weeks show was called “Going out tonight” by Cool Million featuring Nathalie Dorra (Released in September 2008 on the album called “Going out tonight”). Nice summer track, that makes you think of that 1980’s soul/Rn’b sound that features heavily throughout this album. To be honest it’s the start and the use of the funky Rhythm guitar and the synthesiser that makes it so. The drum pattern and bass line are normal enough, but it’s the use of that funky guitar and synthesiser which gives this single that retro 1980’s Rn’b and soul feel. Nathalie voice was good for as the lead singer on this track. However the use of backing singers also helps the track as well immensely. Have a listen to the track in question I’m sure that you will like it. Please click on the link that below so that you can hear the track.

The next track up on the show was “Love Sex Magic” by Justin Timberlake and Ciara (Released in March 2009 from the album called “Fantasy Ride from Ciara). I have to be honest to people here and state that I have only ever played one track from Justin Timberlake in the whole time that I have been hosting this show. I thought I'd better change this. I have to say I like this single, and boy is it funky. I have since found out that it was co-written by Justin Timberlake and others. I have to say that I just love that bass line and drum pattern on this, and the opening whispered lines from Justin makes it sound even better. However, when Ciara starts singing the lead vocals on this it just gets better and better. When both Justin and Ciara come together vocally they sound great. Justin himself gets a chance to sing a verse or two himself within the song later on. All of this is going on together with a funky drum and bassline going on in the background. What more can you ask for. Please have a listen to the track. Make up your own minds.

A second track featuring Justin Timberlake on the show. I must be dreaming, or you must be. No nothings wrong I’d thought I’d just drop another excellent tune Rn’b tune that just begs to be played. This time it features T.I(real name - Clifford Joseph Harris Jr) on the track, who on this occasion is the rapper on the track, and for a few lines does some singing himself this time. Once again this single features a very infectious funky bass line and drum pattern to start the show off together with Justin and TI Singing the song main hook line.It works by just doing that. T.I when asked to come up with the rapping for the song comes correct and delivers. Justin when doing the singing part of the song sounds like Prince. Yes he sounds like the Purple one(*Prince!). I love this single. If dropped this on the dance floor it would get most people on it. Its not complicated, in fact its dance friendly. Towards the end of the song we even hear T.I singing himself. Please give yourself a chance if you haven’t heard this song before. Just click on the link provided below to hear the song in full.

The next track up was called “Good Women Down” by Mary J Blige (released in 2006 from the album called “The breakthrough”). Sounds very 1980’s in regards to what is coming out these days in the current climate of RN’B music releases. It does come with a slight hip hop drum pattern, but not that heavy as the producer (9th Wonder) is trying to keep it as melodic as possible so that Mary can do what Mary does best; and that is to sing. Apparently what I didn’t know about this single release was that it had used the part of the song called “Heart Breaking Decision” by Melissa Morgan (From the album called "Do Me Baby” – 1987) as sample within this track (Good Women Down). Anyway, Mary sings this beautiful, when she has to hit the high notes she hits the high notes, when she needs to put emotion in the song, she delivers also. A really nice track, and one that I hope that you will click on the link below and have a listen yourself.

Staying with the year of 2006 sees me bringing out another quality cut from that year. This time it features Omar Lye Fook and Angie Stone with “All for me” (Released in 2006 from the album called “Sing if you want to”) this one features heavily on the soul music side of Rn’b music this time but with just slight touch of funk added for good measure. Omar Lye Fook does all the singing on this track right up to 2 minutes and twenty-two seconds (this is of a track that lasts 3 minutes forty five seconds in total.). I have to say it sounds so atmospheric, and yet so soulful, and with a touch of funk thrown in for good measure at the same time. Omar puts a lot of emotion in his singing on this song. However, when Angie Stone’s vocal parts come to play on this project it sounds as if she hardly put any effort in her part, and yet it sounds so spot on. What a singer she is. This groove and tempo is made for both of these vocalists. I love the drum pattern, bass line, the keyboards chords and the acoustic guitar riff and licks on this track as well. In fact I love everything about this release. Have a listen to this track and see what I mean. Please click on the link below to hear for yourself.

The names Q-tip, Phife Dawg, & Ali Shaheed Muhammad might not mean much to people who aren’t that familiar to the world of Hip Hop Music. However, if I was to mention to you the group are better known as A Tribe called Quest most people would smile.I decided to ahead and drop out and out Hip Hop music for the listeners. “Find my way” by A tribe called Quest (Released in 1998 on the album called “The Love Movement”). Wow this still sounds good. Its still makes my head rock to be honest to you. It starts with the group uttering the chorus of the track, then that funky bass line and drum pattern gets me. The rapping of Phife Dawg and Q-tip who take turns at the mike is brilliant. I also love the way they incorporate the girly like backing vocals in the chorus as well. It all works so well. Don’t take my words for it, please have a listen yourself by clicking on the link below to do so.

Saying with Hip hop music saw me dropping something from the Uk, and from a new up and coming artist so to speak. The artist is Joleon Davaughan from East London, England. He is a new and up and coming artist that I always like to try and champion on the show if I can. It’s really difficult these days to make it within the music industry these days, and if I can help and like your stuff I will do so. I have to admit once again that I have already played this track on the show already. But it was another track that has made a big impression on the listeners to the show. The song is called “Feel good feel” by Joleon Davenue (released 2007 on the mixtape called “Something Special”, London, England).

I loved everything about this track. I loved the sample that was used and speeded up to match the rap that was accompanying it. It is a well-known tune within the Rare Groove music fans of this music. It fact he (Joleon) had used the Don Blackmon’s track called “Holding you, Loving you” (released 1982 – from the album called Don Blackman) to create this tune. Joleon’s version dare I say it, is even more funkier then the original. Or should I say it’s more danceable? Yeah I will say more danceable that’s the word. I love the way he raps on this. It’s all about telling a story. And I have to say he does it well. Yet another Hip Hop track that if you listen to the words you can actually envisage in what he is telling you. Have a listen to the track. You will like it, and maybe cause you to enquire more about this new and up and coming artist from the Uk. Please click on his Myspace website to find out more about him.

http://www.myspace.com/joleondavenue

Yet another track that I drop for my listeners that features Hip Hop music. The track is called "Skills" by Gangstarr (Released in 2004 on the album called "The Ownerz") which is another track that is heavily influenced by funk music and great hiphop drumbeats. The lyrics are provided and rapped over by Guru. His flow and his delivery is spot on within this track. For instance the chorus of the song goes just like this. (Skills) Top rank point blank we vital - Spit flows rip shows peep the recital – (Skills) Now, you feel it when we drop those - Hot beats stop phoes killin shit we got those - (Skills) It's, the music that the street love -Each thug, is now reppin this with deep love -(Skills) Gang Starr duelin again rulin again - Watch as we do it again. The beats are supplied by the Dj, who is known as DJ Premier. I would love to know what sampled was used to create this classic Hiphop track? Anyone know? Anyway please have a listen to that track below to hear this classic.

Moved away just ever so slightly from the straight out and out Hip-hop Music tracks with my next selection. It does feature some rapping on the single though (I just couldn’t help it!). The single that I played for my listeners was “Real love” by Rell featuring Consequence and Kayne West (Released in 2004). Wow this sounds so good, the singing and the rapping are both spot on. I love Rell's voice, it sounds so good on this single. It makes you wonder how a talent like his hasn’t made it further in the music business. The rapper called Consequence provides a really good rap that keeps in the flow of the music and the temp of the track. The track was produced by Kanye West in the year of 2004, when it seemed as if everything he did or touched was turned to gold. Just have listen yourself you know you want to.

The next track features a more traditional sounding Rn’b track that hones in on the Neo soul side of Rn’b music instead of the Hip Hop influenced style of Rn’b music. “Love calls” by Kem featuring Floetry (Released in 2004) is the name of the track that was played. Kem heralds from Detroit, Usa and Floetry herald from London, England together with this remixed tune they came up with a true classic. The original cut was to be found on his debut album called “Khemistry” that was released in 2003. However, one of the big hits from the album (“Love calls”) got remixed by Darryl James (a DJ, remixer and producer) which became an even bigger hit on radio stations across the Usa in 2004; and helped to establish Floetry in the Usa. It has a slight Hip Hop drum pattern within this remix of the tune, however the soft Keyboards jazz/soul like chords on this track are prefect. Kem takes control of the lead vocals so well that he sounds like a cross between Al Jarreau and Lou Rawls at times such is brilliance of his voice on this one. Floetry are just prefect as backing vocals singers on this track as well, they come in at the right time, and stay silent at the right times. Everything is prefect on this single. Slow to mid tempo niceness is what we have here. Have a listen to see what I mean. Just click on the link below.

Staying with theslow to mid tempo Rn’b styled tracks I continue the ride with this - “Taking to me” by Amerie (Released in 2002 from the album called “All I have”). In my opinion this is still the best album that Amerie has done so far in her career. Its one of those album where you could put it in your Cd music player and let it just roll. You know what I mean? No need to arrange what songs that you would like to hear, or shuffle around the play list to get to the best tracks as every one is a winner on this album. Starts of with an Acoustic guitar playing in the background and a simple drum pattern and bass line. Then comes the lovely voice of Amerie on the sing. Wow, is all I can say. She has a really good voice, and to make it even better she is helped along by backing singers who are right on the money as well. This is good, real good, and it mystifies me that this never did better then it should. Great single. Have a listen.

As the last throes of the last song within the Rare Groove selection was finishing. I had already decided on playing Soulful House and Garage music. I haven’t played much of any thing from that gender in a long time, and for this week I decided to put things right.

I started the ball rolling so to speak with this track, which is called “Someday, someway” by Brooklyn Underground featuring Supreme Mind (Released in 1992). As some of you may know or not I have a healthy love for the music of House and Garage music. I have done for many years if it features the elements of Jazz, Soul or Funk within its elements I‘m a sucker for the music. This typifies the type of House and Garage music that I fell in love with all those years ago. I love the use of the xylophone on this track it gives it that jazz vibe to the single; also the use of the keyboards which has that jazz riff going all the way through the single is marvellous. The soul is provided by the artists called Supreme Mind who puts so much emotion in his voice that you just can’t get enough of this track; in fact its so Moorish. As the track moves on another jazz like instrument is added to the pot so speak. A saxophone riff is also added that keeps it so jazz. The bass line funky as hell in all of this. All I ask is that you have a listen to this track, it will change you thoughts on House and Garage music. Please click on the link below.

Played another Jazz House track but nearly all instrumental, but half way through Kevin Yost utters the words repeatedly “I dream of you” as a semi softly spoken chant. The track is called “Dreams of you” by Kevin Yost (Released in 1997 on the album called One starry night”). It’s one of those records that just builds and builds. First with drums, then comes the bass line, and then finally come those soft jazzy keyboard chords and Jazz solo’s lines in the background. What a nice House track this is. It’s one that you’ve got to hear yourselves. Please click on the link below to hear the full release of this gorgeous track.

Decided on playing one more House track, and this one falls in the category of Soulful House instead of Jazz House. It doesn’t come better than this in my opinion, and that is “Whatever makes you happy” by Ten City (Released in 1990). The bass line of this track throbs at the beginning of this track, as does the High falsetto voice, which is Bryon Stingly. Then comes in the drumbeats and the simple keyboards stabs, and would you believe it a flute and a set of Congo’s brought in as well. All mixed up perfectly by Dj/Producer superstar that is David Morales. But the star of all this is Bryon Stingly. His voice is tailored made for this in fact. I’m sure that this has been said a thousand times before that he reminds so many people of the late great Sylvester who was a Disco and Soul vocalist of the 1970’s and early 1980’s in regards to his voice. It’s such a Happy song, summery song in fact. I sure that by the time you clicked on the link below, and listen to the song yourself you will be singing the chorus yourself which is - Different strokes for different folkes, Whatever makes you happy, Some do some don't, some will some won’t, Whatever makes you happy.Click on the link below and have a singsong.

Looking up on the studio clock I didn’t realise that there was around 15 minutes left on the show to go. Wow was I having fun or what? I ended up playing on the show with the playing the second of part of the Rare Groove selection part 2. No I'm not going to tell you what I played. Listen in whenever I play live, and you will find out.

I hope that you leave any comments about the various songs that you either heard through reading this Blog page or via listening to the show when it was played live on Sunday. Please leave any comments here and have you say.

If you are an up and coming artist/s and you would like exposure for your music. Please leave your comments here as well so that I can get back to you. Please do not be shy. Thanks.

Electric Soul Show – 5th April 2009 – Ipswich Town , England – www.icrfm.co.uk

*Remember the Electric Soul Show takes place every Sunday between 10am to 12 noon - English time. Please see your own countries or cities time slot/s for the same time period of the show on the white strip or bar on the right hand side of this website please*

First tune for the new show started with this track “Pulling me back” by Chingy featuring Tyresse (Released 2005). This is a really nice track that combines a mighty fine Rapper in the name of Chingy, with a good quality singer in the name of Tyresse. The main strength of the track is the fact that it uses a sample that has become a Bass Guitar standard for young and up and coming Bass Guitarists. The sample that was used was called “Portrait of Tracy” by Jaco Pastorius, from his debut album called Jaco Pastorius (1976). Many Bass Guitarist are not considered Bass artists until they can play this piece of music by Jaco Pastorius. It’s that important. Anyway Chingy has updated this version with an Rn’b feel and vibe and a features a good Rap. Please have a listen to this track by clicking on the link below.

Changed it up a bit with the next track selection. Soulful Hip hop if it can be called that and it is called “That’s what I’m talking about” by Pete Rock and Rell (Released 2008 on the album called “New York Finest”). This is funky, danceable and yet so soulful at the same time. It’s the opening drum pattern and bass line that sets the whole thing up. The First 20 seconds to be precise are so funky. Then comes in Rells soulful voice together with backing singers. Wow.

Then after about 1 minute Pete Rock supplies us with a really good rap. I mean a rap with lyrics that seem to fit the flow of the song and tell a story at the same time. I can tell you that you will be nodding your head to this song. It has the right balance of Funk and Soul that doesn’t fight against each other but compliment each other. Please click on the link below to hear the song.

Staying with the mode of Rn’b music I decided to play this track in which when it was released didn’t reach the heights in the Rn’b charts that it should have done. The track was a combination between P Diddy and Jamie Foxx called “Partners for life”(Released in 2006, Usa). It has such a nice groove to it, that it could be used for rappers of the like of Phonte Coleman (Little Brother fame) to rap over. However, on this occasion P Diddy does all the rapping on this cut whereas the singing is all by Jamie Foxx. Boy I have to say that that this fella can sing.

I will be honest to you I have only just picked this up myself after all those years. And to me this is something. I love the melody of the music on this. Very Soulful, and touches of Funk with the bass line and the drum pattern and yet every so often so very faint and nice Jazz Chords are thrown in. One of those cuts that got away, but it doesn’t mean that can’t listen to it. Please click on the link below to hear it please.

Well I just can’t seem to get of the Rn’b musical roundabout can I? In fact here is another song from Ryan Leslie that fits perfectly well within that musical mode. The track in which I am on about is called “Valentine” by Ryan Leslie (Released 2009, on the album called “Ryan Leslie”, Usa). I have played on a few occasions in the last month. At the moment it is one of my favourite albums to be honest.

Ryan Leslie is himself a fine singer, songwriter and producer on this cut and on the whole album to be precise. As mentioned previously I have played this a few times already on this show, and is now already a firm favourite with the listeners. Probably the nicest tune from his debut album that has been recently released. Nice and soulful I have to say. A track that reminds me of the how artists from the late 1980’s and mid nineties Rn’b artists used to make tracks. It’s a slow to mid tempo tune in which I like and is helped along by the lush sounding strings and the very faint piano like riff in the background. Please have a listen to this tune. You will like it.

As the last throes of the last song within the Rare Groove selection was finishing. I had already decided on playing Rn’b music with a healthy twist of rap music going right through it. On this occasion it came form the artist called Marsha Ambrosha featuring Phonte Coleman (from Little Brother and Foreign Exchange fame). The track that I played from them was called “Sunshine” by Marsha Ambrosius and Phonte Coleman (released 2008 on the mixtape called “Yours Truly” USA).

I have recently played this tune only last week on the show. It still makes my head nod every time I listen to it; and yet at the same time makes me sing a couple of verses of the track to boot as well. Marsha Ambrosius is from London, England, and moved over to the Usa about 7 years ago to see if she could make it in the music industry within the Usa via the group that she was in called Floetry. The move worked as it Floetry had underground club success with single and album releases that they bought out over there. However, Marsha Ambrosius has recently bought out a mixtape called “Yours truly” (Released in December, 2008). On this particular mixtape there is a track called “Sunshine” by Marsha Ambrosius feat Phonte Coleman (From Little Brother and Foreign Exchange fame) they have a great track in their hands. It’s so funky, and yet soulful at the time that each particular musical vibe is not contradicting each other vibe on this track. Marsha voice is starting to be loved all over America if you are a straightforward Rn’b fan. Where’s as the rapper called Phonte Coleman on this track of Little Brother and Foreign Exchange fame have already secured a huge Underground following from where they are based (which is North Carolina) to New York and Los Angeles, is superb.

Phonte Coleman performance in fact (The rapping!)is first class. It isn’t rushed, the timing and pace of the rap is spot, and the lyric that he chooses makes you smile when you think of them. He and the group that he is in Little Brother and Foreign Exchange have bought back memories of how RAPPING used to be delivered in the days of the Native Tongues collective (A Tribe called Quest, Da La Soul, Jungle Brothers, Mone Love). Please have a listen to this tune by clicking on the link below.

Moving away totally away from any essence of Rap or Hip Music influence for a moment I decided to play a track from the man of the moment once again. That is of course Ryan Leslie. I decided on playing a second track from his recently released debut album called “Ryan Leslie” as well on the show tonight. The track picked up on this occasion was “I.R.I.N.A” by Ryan Leslie (released 2009 on the album called Ryan Leslie, Usa). This is a nice slow to mid tempo Rn’b cut that will appeal to most peoples. Not harsh, well sung, you can hear the words really clearly and the chorus is easily singable. The bass line is semi funky and the drums are not over powering on this track. The other instruments such as the piano and keyboards seem intent on just sticking to laying down chords. Ryan Leslie voice however fits like a glove on this track that was earlier released in the year of 2008 and was a big underground hit. The man at the moment seems not to be able to do no wrong. Please click on the link below to hear the song in full.

The next track is back to the Soulful side of Rn’b music once again. I played this track last to be honest. But for those that missed last week show here it is again for you to hear again. Novel is a Rapper, Singer, Songwriter and producer all in one we are told. The track in question is called “Makes you happy”(released in 2009 – to be released on the coming album called “Autobiography”). Reminds me slightly of Raheem Devaughn, or something that he would release if it were also to feature a RAP on his release.

Decided on changing the vibe just very slightly and give my radio listening audience a chance to chance their arms on some quality Urban gospel music. Yes gospel music. For far too long the music loving public has turned its noses up on a music that still sees it being a music where everyone taps a tambourine or gets up a claps together in unison when the preacher tells you to do so.

I thought I’d drop a few modern day styled urban gospels tunes to dismiss this fact. First one up was a track called “Sweetest thing by Kierra “Kikki” Shread (Released from the album called “ I owe you” in 2004).

Wow what a wonderful single this is. This song that was released in 2004 sounds better then some of today’s current Rn’b tracks as well as when it was put against the releases of 2004. The singing of Kierra Shread is first class on this. At the time of this release she was only 18 years old, and yet she sounds like a seasoned professional singer. The bass and drumbeats are first class ands make you want to dance if this was dropped at a nightclub or disco. Or just makes your head nod if you are listening to it on your own at home or on a car journey on your own. In other words it damm right funky. The backing vocalists comes in at the right moments for this song and sing their parts perfectly. Thus helping Kierra to concentrate fully on her lead vocal duties. If you want to hear this and any other tracks from Kierra, please go to her myspace website to find out more about her and any news about her pending new album.

Stayed with the urban gospel style of music with another glorious cut from another under rated artist. Her name is Shei Atkins heralding from Houston, Texas; and the track that I was going to play from her was “Call me” (Released from the album called “The lite mae show” in 2005). The start is so simple. It uses an acoustic guitar playing straight jazz like chords put against a Hip Hop styled drum beat in the opening bars of the track. Almost immediately Shei’s voice is added to this funky groove, and makes it even more pleasurable. Then comes the backing vocals which is just as good as Shei’s input here and makes the song sound even sweeter. By the time the song is in full swing a simple keyboard is added to make the song more fuller and seems to be playing that same chords as the acoustic guitar is playing. Wonderful single from Shei Atkins in which I hope that she continues to make music like this. This is a great single. In fact I feel that this the best track so far that Shei has made. It sounds so simple, but it so effective, and it sounds so nice. If you get a chance to hear it, please listen to it track. But for now you can find out more about Shei's from her myspace website.

Urban gospel made the decks for the 3rd time in a row at the moment from me on this show. On this occasion the single is called “Stay saved” by Canton Jones (Released from the album called “Password” in 2006). Yet another quality cut, that features tight like drumbeats and a slow funky bass line that works. On a lot of these urban like gospel tunes the backing vocals are spot on, and can make or break a song. On this song the backing vocals are spot on. His use of visual type of lyrics really makes you think or certain situations or spots that you have found yourself in that if you count to ten sometimes you can take the “Heat” of certain situations. Canton has a great ability in incorporating his great singing ability with his ability to rap as well. To be honest I loved everything about this track. If you want to hear why then please click on the link below to hear the track for yourself below.

I decided on moving away from the music format of urban gospel music for now, and decided to give up and coming talent a chance to sun in regards to their material being heard over the airwaves. I played this last week as it happens and the artist being was called Kastaway, Chicago, Usa. I found this artist over the Internet whilst looking and researching for new talent within the Hip hop world. The track that I wanted to play from them was called “My life” by Kastaway (released 2008 on the mixtape called “1934” Chicago, USA).

Very soulful sounding and I have to say that sounds like they have taken a sample from one of those 1970’s soul groups and then beefed it up a bit. Love the atmospheric feel that this track has on it, and also liked the drum pattern and bass line on this. I also love the distant sounding Horns on this well. Then half way through the track a trombone like horn riff can heard more strongly throughout. I love this effect. This makes me nod my head, which is always a good sign.

I like the rapper (Kastaway) on this as well. He delivers a poetry styled like rap on this tune. He gives us an insight about his life so far. It’s one of those tracks that you have to listen to a few times and then you will fall in love in a big way. It will hit you over the head in which you will not fully recover from in fact. Give it a listen you will eventually love this track. Please click on the track link below to hear it.

Staying with Underground Hiphop or rap music sees me move to London, England for my next track. This is also another up and coming artist wanting to gain exposure over the airwaves. His name is Joker Starr featuring Micall Parknsun and the track is called “Stay on the move” (Released in February 2009). Has that feel in which Common, Little Brother, and Slum Village would use; or should I say have used. Soulful Hiphop that works my friends. I would love to know what sample they used to make up this classy cut with. It’s sound so jazzy and yet very soulful at the time. The drums keeps the vibe all funky, and the vocals when occasional sung are very street like in there delivery. The rapping uses London dialect and phrasing within the tune, which is always a good way to go. I like the uses of two different rappers on this track. It does break up the track somewhat as well. Please have a listen to this track. I think that it will surprise a lot of people on how good it is. You might have to listen to it a few time to get it, but after that 3rd play you will love it. Please click on the track below to hear for yourself.

Played this track last week, and I was so impressed with it that I decided to drop the tune again this week. Slakah the Beatchild featuring Drake – “Bad meaning good” (released in 2008 on the album called “Soul Movement). Wow I missed this one. In fact I’ve only just picked this up. Shame on you Dj Mistri, call yourself a Dj? All I have to say about this track is that it is lovely. A real nice track, which I enjoyed playing from start to finish.

The next track that I selected stayed on a funky and yet soulful tip. The track in question was called “Reach out for my Soul” by Sy Smith featuring Wes Felton (Released 2008 on the album called Conflicts). This tune that had the funky vibe all the way through it, but featured a definite soulful edge to it at the same time. That side (Soul) was provided by Sy Smith wonderful vocals, however the drum pattern and the bassline just wanted to make you groove. Yes it was so damm funky. There is a credible rap provided by Wes Felton half the way through this track that breaks up the tune just right.

A wonderful single that could be easily re-released again and it would top many Rn’b music charts around the world. Even normal national charts as well. Have a listen to the track in question by clicking on the link below.

Looking up on the studio clock I didn’t realise that there was around 13 minutes left on the show to go. Wow was I having fun or what?
