re: Electric Soul Show - 25th March 2009 - 105.7fm - Ipswich, England - www.icrfm.co.uk

*Please note -New time for the Electric Soul Show is Now on Sunday’s – Time – 10am to 12 noon - (English Time) - The new date of the new show time will be 5th April, 2009*

My last Wednesday on ICR FM (105.7FM). Yes its official, it’s my last Wednesday on the station. On entering the building and heading towards the Radio studio within the station I was greeted by Nick Greenland. Mr Greenland is our stationmaster, and it has been agreed and worked out that ICR Radio station was re-vamping the Radio schedule. I was put out of my misery so to speak, as I was told that I wasn’t one of the Dj presenters or their shows that was going to be asked to make way for new presenters and shows altogether.

With a huge sigh of relief on hearing the news that my show was to be kept on the schedule I literally sailed over to the studio. However, there was a sting in the tail. My show was now being moved to a Sunday. Time for the show would be 10am to 12noon (English time). Different time for the show, but an extra 30 minutes. Well I can’t complain can’t all be bad? I will miss playing on a Wednesday though. I had gotten used to my old time slot (20:30pm to 22:00pm). But at least I had a show so be grateful for that I told myself.

With that in mind I decided to drop a new tune that I had just managed to acquire. Slakah the Beatchild featuring Drake – “Bad meaning good” (released in 2008 on the album called “Soul Movement). Wow I missed this one. In fact I’ve only just picked this up. Shame on you Dj Mistri, call yourself a Dj? All I have to say about this track is that it is lovely. A real nice track, which I enjoyed playing from start to finish. First of all it sounds so much like a summer track. I love the simple acoustic guitar chord strums employed by the Slakah the Beatchild. What they say about giving less to appear that you are giving more is true. I love the bass line on and the drum pattern that just touches on giving you a Hip hop feel, but it is heavily influenced by funk. The whole vibe on the song though is heavily influenced by Soul Music. I love Slakah voice (It reminds me slightly of Dwele!) However it’s prefect on this tune, as is the rap provided by Drake. Drake’s rap doesn’t over power the tune; it allows the tune to breath and have another musical option. I’m going to check out the album if this is anything to go buy in regards to hearing this tune. Wow this is good. Please have a listen to the track yourself by clicking on the track yourself below.

I love this next tune that I dropped. In fact I played this tune only last week on the show. It still makes my head nod and yet at the same time makes me sing a couple of verses of the track. Marsha Ambrosius is from London, England, and moved over to the Usa about 7 years ago to see if she could make it in the music industry within the Usa via the group that she was in called Floetry. The move worked as it Floetry had underground club success with single and album releases that they bought out over there. However, Marsha Ambrosius has recently bought out a mixtape called “Yours truly” (Released in December, 2008). On this particular mixtape there is a track called “Sunshine” by Marsha Ambrosius feat Phonte Coleman (From Little Brother and Foreign Exchange fame) they have a great track in their hands. It’s so funky, and yet soulful at the time that each particular musical vibe is not contradicting each other vibe on this track. Marsha voice is starting to be loved all over America if you are a straightforward Rn’b fan. Where’s as the rapper called Phonte Coleman on this track of Little Brother and Foreign Exchange fame have already secured a huge Underground following from where they are based (which is North Carolina) to New York and Los Angeles, is superb.

Phonte Coleman performance in fact (The rapping!)is first class. It isn’t rushed, the timing and pace of the rap is spot, and the lyric that he chooses makes you smile when you think of them. He and the group that he is in Little Brother and Foreign Exchange have bought back memories of how RAPPING used to be delivered in the days of the Native Tongues collective (A Tribe called Quest, Da La Soul, Jungle Brothers, Mone Love). Please have a listen to this tune by clicking on the link below.

The next track is back to the Soulful side of Rn’b music once again. Novel is a Rapper, Singer, Songwriter and producer all in one we are all told. The track in question is called “Makes you happy” (released in 2009 – to be released on the coming album called “Autobiography”). Reminds me slightly of Raheem Devaughn, or something that he would release if it were also to feature a RAP on his release. You know what I mean? A big sounding bass line and Drum pattern on this tune, which is sweetened by good vocals from Novel on this track. Also soulful keyboards give this track a mellow edge as well. Novel is helped on this track by some underrated background vocals as well. As I mentioned before earlier on within this page that the vibe of Soul music either directly or indirectly is really making its mark on release within the Rn’b and Hip Hop music world for 2009. Lets hope it continues. Please have a listen to the tune below by clicking on the link and hearing the tune in full.

Went back in time for my next track “Let me be the one” by Intro (released in 1993 from the album called “Intro”), which is still loved by people today. This track came from the group’s debut album, and was considered a smash. The lead singer on this cut being Kenny Green really does sing his heart out here. And is helped along brilliantly via their backing vocals from Clinton Buddy Wike and Bandanna. It has that New Jack swing beat running along in the background of the song. You have to remember that we were in the height of the New Jack swing craze of 1993 then. Still sounds fresh when listening to this “jam”. I still think it could be a hit today if it was released all over again in 2009. Please have a listen to the track in question by clicking on the link below.

Went back to the decade of 2000 from the 1990’s and touched on Rick James via one of the last great tracks that he did before he died in 2005. The track was called “Taste” (released in 2006 on the Soul Together album volume 1), and I have to say that is brilliant. It’s the bass line and the simple guitar riff that sets this song apart from the rest. No the bass line is not difficult or hard to pick up. It’s just so infectious. The drums on this are equally simple as well. The keyboards on this are also kept simple. That Guitar riff that goes really makes you pay attention to the tune. However, the vocals of Rick James are a combination of being half sung, and half spoken on this. He is helped as well on this track on occasion via great sounding backing vocals. A real pleasure to play this tune for my listeners today; please have a listen to the tune yourselves by clicking on the track below.

The next track that is up is by Marsha Ambrosius featuring Busta Rymes with the track called “Dat shit” (released in 2008 on the mixtape called “Yours truly”).

I love Marsha voice. As you have already noticed that I have already played on track from her this evening on the show. However, one once again falls within that Rn’b vocalist combining with an established Rapper. This time around the Rapper is Busta Rhymes. Need I say anymore? Love the beat on this track. Nice and slow, but one that will make your head nod, its that funky. The drum line alone makes you think of Hip hop alone. However, the opening lyrics are all sung by Marsha, and aided with some background singers this time around. Three quarters through the song comes Busta with a few expletives in his rapping. But the flow of his rap matches the song perfectly (but Busta keep it clean please there’s children listening!). Maybe I will hunt around for a clean version next time I want to play this. If you want to listen to this track please click on the link below.

Another track that sees me whizzing back to the 1990’s and to the era of New Jack Swing music and all that jazz was with the group called Jodeci with the track called “Gimmie all you got”(Released in 1993 on the album called "Diary of a Mad Band"). However, on this occasion I would have to say that this is an out an out Funk cut. It really is. This song features a monstrous bass line and drum line right at the start of the song together with the group singing “Gimme all you got” line, and those Jazz Rhodes chords firmly in the background. Every so and often a blast of a sampled trumpet riff is heard coming in and out of the track as well.

Eventually everything settles down and we the stage is set where we just hear a lead singer and the rest of the band coming in just singing the songs hook – which is “Gimme all you’ve got”. Whatever is happened though we are never left alone by that monstrous bass line and drum pattern. This is probably the funkiest cut I have played tonight. Please have a listen to this track if or when you get the chance. Please just click the link below please.

Yeap you’ve guessed it. It was time for me to play the Rare Groove selection part 1 of the show. For those of you that listen in each week I need not say anything more. For those of you that are new to this well. Each week I play two sections of the Rare Groove selection. 3 songs in each part. These songs are either bonafide rare grooves, or songs that people have simply forgotten about. (However, if you want to know what was played in this part of the show you will have to listen to the show!)

As the last throes of the last song within the Rare Groove selection was finishing. I had already decided on playing some more Hip Hop music within the show (I always seem to play HipHop after the Rare Groove Selection these days?) This came within the form of the group called Joker Starr featuring Micall Parknsun and Ghost Town and the track was called “Its all love” (Released 2009 from London, England). I like this one. I’m not just saying that. I really love the slow funky vibe and groove on this cut. You might have gathered that I’m a sucker for the music of funk, and this has plenty of it within it. However, on this occasion a more Hip-hop vibe takes over the track then just the vibe of funk music does. Joker Starr and the boys give a nice little story line within this tune as well. You can actually envisage what they are telling us through their raps in our minds. Please have a listen to this track by clicking on the link below. You might take two or three plays to appreciate it. However, when you get it you will love it.

I decided on staying with the same format, and also giving up and coming talent a chance of their material being heard over the airwaves. I played this last week as it happens and the artist that I did play was called Kastaway, Chicago, Usa. I found this artist over the Internet whilst looking and researching for new talent within the Hip hop world. The track that I wanted to play from them was called “Wanna Know why” by Kastaway (released 2008 on the mixtape called “1934” Chicago, USA).

Very soulful sounding and I have to say that sounds like they have taken a sample from one of those 1970’s soul groups and then beefed it up a bit. Love the atmospheric feel that this track has on it, and also liked the drum pattern and bass line on this. This makes me nod my head, which is always a good sign.

I like the rapper (Kastaway) on this. He delivers a poetry styled like rap on this tune. He gives us an insight about a girl who he really likes and what she means to him. It’s one of those tracks that you have to listen to a few times and then you will fall in love in a big way. It will hit you over the head in which you will not fully recover from in fact. Give it a listen you will eventually love this track. Please click on the track link below to hear it.

Decided to move away from the Rap/Hip hop scene for a bit. But not from giving up and coming artist/s or acts a few crack of the whip. This group comes to us by the name of Cool Million. Two people official form Cool Million – one person comes from Germany the other is from Denmark. I have received their full length album recently jammed packed with quality songs.

Its that good when ever I opened it up to play anything from it that I spend at least 5 minutes staring at the music selection list deciding what to play. On this occasion I decided on playing “Get up on the Floor” by the Cool Million featuring Donald McCollum(released in 2008 from the album called “Going out tonight). Sounds so 1980’s complete with Keyboard riff, Rhodes jazz like chord progression and with a horn section blowing their hearts out as well! Nice to hear this type of Soul/RNB being made today though hard to believe that it was made in 2008.

The vocalist(Donald McCollum)is not straining in anyway in getting his vocals over to us on this tune. He believes in delivering them without the least effort possible. Have a listen to this track. I bet you will be pressing the repeat button a few times to hear this song again.

The next track was one of those tracks that never really did anything and yet is such as nice tune. Falls in the category of today’s Soulful Rn’b set if anything. The track was a combination between P Diddy and Jamie Foxx called “Partners for life”(Released in 2006, Usa). It has such a nice groove to it that it could be used for a rapper like of Phonte Coleman to rap over. However, on this occasion P Diddy does all the rapping on this cut whereas the singing is all by Jamie Foxx. Boy can this fella sing.

I will be honest to you I have only just picked this up myself after all those years. And to me this is something. I love the melody of the music on this. Very Soulful, and touches of Funk with the bass line and the drum pattern and yet every so often so very faint and nice Jazz Chords are thrown in. One of those cuts that got away, but it doesn’t mean that can’t listen to it. Please click on the link below to hear it please.

Well, yet again I ended the show with the playing the second of part of the Rare Groove selection part 2 on the show. Time just rushed away with me again this week. No I'm not going to tell you what I played. Listen in, and you will find out.

Well, time is now up and I'm away until next Sunday's show. I have to say Sundays from now on! If you want to leave any comments that I have made about any tracks that were played; or any stories that I mentioned relating to the tracks as well. Electric Soul Show – 18th March 2009 – Sbic Ipswich 105.7fm – www.icrfm.co.uk

*Please note that you can post comments about the show directly after all these comments about the tunes played this evening. If you would like a copy of the show, please leave your address details so that I can send you one through the post. Only 3 will be done for each show though*

Wednesday already? Wow they come around so quickly these days. Well, another Wednesday means that it’s another Electric soul show that I can host. I went straight into this weeks show with this “Valentine” by Ryan Leslie (Released 2009, on the album called “Ryan Leslie”, Usa). Ryan Leslie is a singer, songwriter and producer on this cut and on the whole album to be precise. Played this a few times already on this show, and is already a firm favourite with the listeners. Probably my favourite tune from his debut album that is has been recently released. Nice and soulful I have to say this tune is. A track that reminds me of the how artists from the late 1980’s and mid nineties Rn’b artists used to make. It’s a slow to midtempo tune in which I like and is helped along by the lush sounding strings and the very faint piano like riff in the background. Please have a listen to this tune. You will like it.

Next track was artist from the Uk called Joleon Davaughan. He is a new and up and coming artist that I always like to try and champion. Its really difficult these days to make it within the music industry, and if I can help and like your stuff. I will do. I have to admit once again that I have already played this on the show already. To be honest to all of you I played this last week as a matter of fact. But it was another track that has made a big impression on the listeners to the show. The song is called “Feel good feel ” by Jo’Leon Davenue (released 2007 on the mixtape called “Something Special”, London, England).

I loved everything about this track. I loved the sample that was used and speeded up to match the rap that was accompanying it. It is a well-known tune within the Rare Groove music fans of this music. It fact he (JoLeon) had used the Don Blackmon’s track called “Holding you, Loving you” (released 1982 – from the album called Don Blackman) to create this tune. Joleon’s version dare I say it, is even more funkier then the original. Or should I say it’s more danceable? Yeah I will say more danceable that’s the word. I love the way he raps on this. It’s all about telling a story. And I have to say he does it well. Yet another Hip Hop track that if you listen to the words you can actually envisage in what he is telling you. Have a listen to the track. You will like it, and maybe cause you to enquire more about this new and up and coming artist from the Uk. Please click on his Myspace website to find out more about him.

Here’s another up and coming artist, or brand new talent to be given a chance. The track is called “My Style” by Rare Jewelz, from London, England (released in 2008, from the mixtape called Kings Pawn, Uk) and is excellent.

When I received this mixtape I was greeted with around 16 to 18 tracks to listen to. A couple of tracks stood out a mile and these were “Stayed tuned” and called “My style”. I have played “stayed tuned” last week on the show and yet again it was well received. This week it was the turn of “My Style”. This single has a certain Slum Village rap style feel about it. For those of you that are deep into the music of Hip-hop will know what I am thinking of when I say that. Its geared to the soulful approach to Hip hop music. And to give it more credence it is Gospel styled hip Hop record. Yes we are listening to a Gospel Hip Hop tune here. The Rapper called Klarity (who is original from New Jersey, Usa. Now resides in South East London. England) provides great lyrics on this track (about life in general, and how one should go about things), and the tempo and the flow of his delivery is first class. The music is sample fodder however in that it seems that they have used to obscure Soul track for this single. The single is not too fast or not too slow. Please listen to this track by going to groups own my space website.

http://www.myspace.com/rarejewelzmusic

Went back now in time slightly with the next tune. I selected but stayed within the same decade though of 2000 by dropping “Lost my mind” by Jamie Hawkins – (Released on 2000, Usa). This is a lovely mid tempo Rn’b cut with a great sounding funky bass line that works. The tune is sweetened by lead vocals from Jamie Hawkins and his backing singers on this track that makes it so infectious. Simple keyboard chords stabs also sweeten this track that will fall into the Rare Groove status in a few years time.

This is a classy track that many people hoped that Soulful Side Rn’b music would move into. A real hard to find tune I have to say, due to the album never getting a full and proper release. Please have a listen to this tune. You will love it.

Moving back to grooves of Hip Hop music (Seem to be playing lot of it this week don’t I?) I decided to drop this on you “Stormy” by Phonte Coleman who is a member of the group called Little Brother and Foreign Exchange (Released on either 2000 or 2001?). Slow to mid tempo tune which is excellent. Don’t ask me what sample he has used for this track but boy does it work well for this single. Everybody thinks that he is accompanied with a vocalist. No he is not. This is all Phonte Coleman. (Rapping and the singing). Basically he is rapping and singing about a girl that he misses now that she is not around. Its very funky, it an unconventional way. Please have a listen to the track to see what I mean. Please click on the link below to hear the tune in full.

Well the next track that I decided to play was called “Do it my way” by an artists called Rebekka featuring Ali Kazam (Released on 2008 on the mixtape called “Coffee and Music”). Totally different style of music on this occasion I have to say. We are talking Soul Music here, but with a slight attitude of funk vibe thrown in for good measure. Another slow to mid tempo tune I’m afraid, however this features a new and up and coming vocal talent from Norway called Rebekka. Yes Norway. This girl can sing. I’ve heard her on a few Hip Hop and Rn’b collaborations before hand lately. This time I managed to get hold of her debut mixtape that has recently been released and give her a listen more closely this time around. Her vocals on this particular single are spot on indeed and move well within the song. The addition of a funk music vibe within the music only helps. The same goes with the addition of backing singers, and the Rapper called Ali Kazam, which breaks the song up. Please have a listen to the tune below to hear it for yourself.

Staying with Soul styled music it does come any better then this. “Guess who loves you more” Raheem Devaughan (Released in 2005 on the album called “The Love Experience”). Wow this is proper Soul Music. In fact it reminds me of Soul music that came out of the 1970’s view groups such as Blue Magic, Steve Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Stylalistic’s, etc, etc. It’s on that vibe if you know what I mean. The bass line is light and so is the drum pattern, and there is a faint sound of a rhythm guitar in the background that sets up a nice rhythm and tune here. However the tune just so much better with Raheem Devaughan’s lead vocals and other backing vocalists going to town on this. So much emotion put into his vocals when he sings his lyric’s on this tune (Raheem Devaughan). Saying this just a beautiful tune is an understatement. Please, please indulge yourselves on this track. Its that good. Trust me.

Dropped one classic already tonight, and here is the second of the evening. “Just me and you” by Tony! Toni! Tone!(Released in 1990 on the album called The Revival).

Wow, this still sounds good, and could still make it into top ten singles chart across the world. It’s that good. It starts of with the group having a conversation between themselves, and then all of sudden the music is released with Raphael Saddiq singing the lead vocals. A simple drum pattern, simple bass line and a very faint acoustic guitar playing in the back ground allow for groove to wash over you and caress you at the same time. Raphael voice is first class on this track, and the others in the group who in turn give great backing vocals support on this single help it along. The acoustic guitar solo in the middle of the tune works wonders, and adds another dimension to the track. This song was featured within the film called “Boyz in the Hood” when it was released, and became a huge favourite then. Please listen to this tune all over again and enjoy. Just click the button below.

I love this next tune that I dropped. It makes my head nod and yet at the same time makes me sing a couple of verses of the track. Marsha Ambrosius is from London, England, and moved over to the Usa about 7 years ago to see if she could make it in the music industry within the Usa via the group that she was in called Floetry. Electric Soul Show - 11th March 2009 - Ipswich, England - www.ircfm.co.uk

*Please note that you can post comments about the show directly after all these comments about the tunes played this evening. If you would like a copy of the show, please leave your POSTAL ADDRESS details so that I can send you one through the post. Only 3 Cd recording of the show will be done for each show though. So the first 3 people to contact me wanting them will get them*

Well, Wednesday has reached once again, and that means another Electric soul show that I can host. I went straight into this weeks show without any interruptions and played this track. “Oh so sexy” by Jon B feat Paul Wall (Released 2008, Usa). Jon B is the singer, songwriter on this cut and Paul Wall is the bonafide rapper. Nice and soulful I have to say this tune is, and one that is helped along by a nice Hop Hip beat in the background. It’s a slow to midtempo tune in which I like and is helped along by the lush sounding strings and the very faint piano like riff in the background. The rap is provided by Paul Wall is just right. It’s not too soft that you can’t make out what he is trying to say; and yet not too demanding that it dominates the track. Jon B is a singer and songwriter who has never really has gotten the credit that others feel that he should deserve. This is a real nice tune. Have a listen to the track yourselves and you will see what I mean.

I have playing for the last 3 weeks cuts from the new Ryan Leslie debut album called "Ryan Leslie". I was to continue playing tracks by Ryan with yet another track from the album called “Shouldn’t have to wait” by Ryan Leslie (released 2009 by Ryan Leslie from the album called Ryan Leslie). One of the smoother cuts from the album that moved along on a mid temp groove.

Similar to the previous tune played before it, in that it has the popular Hip Hop beat driven groove in the background. However, this is sweetening by soulful styled keyboards and acoustic sounding guitars this time around. Of course lets not forget Ryan Leslie on lead vocals and his background singers they also add the cherry to the top of the cake. This is the official 3rd release from the album and in my opinion they have made the right choice. The Soulful Rn’b music lovers will love this tune. Please click on the link below, and hear the tune for yourselves.

The next track sees me giving you some Hip Hop music with a healthy dose of funk in the groove. The track is called “I believe” by Q-Tip featuring D’Angelo (released 2008 on the album called “The Renaissance”). Wow I believe (sorry for the pun) that the version of the track is not on the album? What a shame as it so so funky. It really is. Starts off with hand claps, then a few words from Q-tip; and then all of a sudden everything comes together. Bassline, drums, background singers and of course rapping and flow by Q-Tip. The bass line and drum pattern are so dam funky. If anything it reminds me of something that the artist called Prince would do back in the day. I have to say that I just love Q-tip voice. It sounds like a teenager, even though he’s well into his 40’s. I like the flow of the rap by him on this cut as well. He always enough space for the funky bassline and drum pattern to allows us the listener to enjoy the groove as well. Sometimes less is more. This version should have been on the album. Have a listen to the track. I’m sure that you will agree.

More Hip-hop music for you all out there, and this time it comes from England. The artist/s are Joker Starr featuring Micall Parknsun and Ghost Town (Released 2009 from London, England).

Played this last week for the first time, and decided to play this again this week. As stated last week on the show I said that I don’t normally play track/s from Justin Timberlake. However this is yet another tune with a huge element of funk music like a stick of Candy rock going all the way through it.The track is called "If I" by Justin Timberlake and T.I(Released 2008). I also have to say this again; yet another tune that seems to have the influence of Prince making a big impact on this song. The influence of the man can be felt all the way through this tune. The bass line and drums patterns on this track are just so funky and are right on the money. It just makes you really want to dance. Justin Timberlake I have to say does sound slightly like Prince or am I hearing things? T.I also gives a really nice and credible rap on this tune, even singing a few lines himself here. At the moment this one of the most popular tracks on the Rn’b dance floors. Please have a listen to this track to hear why by clicking on the button below.

Yeap you’ve guessed it. It was time for me to play the Rare Groove selection part 1 of the show. For those of you that listen in each week I need not say anything more. For those of you that are new to this well; each week I play two sections of the Rare Groove selection. 3 songs within each part. These songs are either bonafide rare grooves, or songs that people have simply forgotten about. (However, if you want to know what was played in this part of the show you will have to listen to the show!)

As with last week I was in the last throes of the last song within the Rare Groove selection. After the Rare Selection had finished. I had already decided on playing some more Hip Hop music within the show. This came from of the artist called Jo’Leon Davenue from the Uk.

This was an artist that I had found whilst travelling all over the Internet looking and researching for new talent within the Hip-hop world. To my surprise I had found an artists that was right on my shores would you believe it. The track that I wanted to play from him was called “Feel good feel ” by Jo’Leon Davenue (released 2007 on the mixtape called “Something Special”, London, England).

I loved everything about this track. I loved the sample that was used and speeded up to match the rap that was accompanying it. It is a well-known tune within the Rare Groove music fans of this music. It fact he (Jo Leon) had used the Don Blackmon’s track called “Holding you, Loving you” (released 1982 – from the album called Don Blackman) to create this tune. Joleon’s version dare I say it, is even more funkier then the original. Or should I say its more danceable? Yeah I will say more danceable that’s the word. I love the way he raps on this. It’s all about telling a story. And I have to say he does it well. Yet another Hip Hop track that if you listen to the words you can actually envisage in what he is telling you. Have a listen to the track. You will like it, and maybe cause you to enquire more about this new and up and coming artist from the Uk. Please click on his Myspace website to find out more about him.

Well the next track up on the show saw me playing a tune going all the way back to 1995. Slightly funky track but with more influences of soul music running through this cut then with funk music for this old school Rn’b track. The track in question is called “Treat U Rite” by Angela Winbush (released 1995 on the album called “Angela”) and is a classic. Angela is one those artists that can still easily match the youngsters who are now ruling the roost at the moment within Rn’b music. This song was produced, as was the whole album by Chuckii Brooker, who was at the time one of the most in demand producers within Rn’b Music of the 1990’s. Getting back to the song, Angela’s voice is first class. So much emotion in her voice within this tune that it makes you want to play the song over and over again. I love the groove of this track. The bass line and the drums are kept nice and simple and on the beat. This allows Angela and her backing singers to go to work with the vocals side of things on this track. Please have a listen to this track. You will love it all over again if you haven’t heard if for such a long time. If you new to it, well you’re in for a treat. Please click on the link below to her the song for yourselves.

Well, I have been accused of not playing any House and Garage music on the show of late by none other than Dj Nzk. He is our resistant House and Garage man on ICR radio station. I thought I’d show him, and then went about pulling out a track that was always played by most of the visiting Usa Dj’s that visited to our town of Ipswich, England, way back in the early 1990’s. The track that I was to play was called “When You Love Someone”(Groove Instrumental mix) by Daphne, Peter Daou and Danny Tenaglia (Released 1993, Usa).

This has got to be one of the most coolest records within the House and Garage music that I like back in the day that I own. This is so jazzy and yet so funky at the same time that I believe that anyone that doesn’t like House music will shortly do so after hearing this tune. The drum pattern is heavy, and the bass line is simple. It’s the use of the Rhodes Piano and the Jazz like chords that he uses that make this track so sublime. I like that crashing sound that comes in and out of the track every so often that adds more depth to the track as well. Please have a listen to this tune. I hope that you will by clicking on the link below.

I tell you what I was now in a House and Garage groove. I frantically searched my big green bag that I carry all my tunes in and decided to go for one more big House and Garage track. I decided on playing this classic. “I can’t believe” by Todd Edwards (Released in 1995, Usa). Still after hearing this tune after all the years its still sounds funky, bumpy and soulful all at the same time. I will always think of summer time whenever I hear this track. Todd Edwards in the mid- 1990’s became something of a House and Garage god to us over here in England. His records are loved and treasured by many over her that are firmly trenched within the House and Garage sound. I love the various vocals samples that he uses and blends them all together within this one track. In fact my favourite vocal snippet that he uses is “Can you believe”. Can you believe it? Please have a listen top the tack below to hear it for yourself.

Well, I ended the show with the playing the second of part of the Rare Groove selection part 2 on the show. No I'm not going to tell you what I played. Listen in, and you will find out. What I will tell you is that I really was stretched for time and just managed to the 3 tunes in for this week. But only just.

Well, my time is now up and I'm away until next Wednesday show. If you want to leave any comments that I have made about any tracks that were played; or any stories that I mentioned relating to the tracks as well. Then please add your own personal comments below via clicking on the "Comments button" OK? Don't be afraid to have your say here.

Electric Soul Show – 4th March 2009 – 105.7fm – Ipswich Town, England

No runnings around for me today thank goodness. All on time and raring to go as I was waiting for Dj Abel to finish his show, and then I would be in the driving seat. The very first track of the evening came from two vocalists/musicians in the name of The Chestnut Brothers. They heralded from Atlanta, Georgia, Usa. I was playing tracks from this album religiously during the back end of 2008 for my listeners who especially loved this track.“Whole lot of you in me”(by the Chestnut Brothers released in 2008 from the album called “Retro Soul”). It’s a mid tempo track that makes you pay attention from the opening bars of the song. I love the start of the track. They have a nice synth riff in which they loop over and over again. I really do like that idea that they used at the start of the song. But the singing of both the vocalists on this track are right on the money so to speak. Please have a listen to this track you will really like it. Click on the link below.

In my bag I fished out a brand new track to play on the Electric Soul show tonight for my listeners. The track in question is called “Put it in the Wind” by Teedra Moses (2009 release) which is I received as a promo. Slow to nearly mid tempo Rn’b tune here. Teedra Moses on the underground Rn’b scene seems to be getting more and more respect and fan base as she is bringing out quality tunes each and every time these days. However, it always seems that chart success eludes her. I like the funky bass on this, and the drum pattern within this track. Its not that complicated or harsh sounding that it drowns Teedra’s voice. And what a lovely voice she has. It’s made to sound even better with a couple of backing singers that enhancers her voice even better. I like the futuristic keyboards sounds that are on this track as well. Enhances the funky sound even better. Please click on the link below to hear the song in full yourself.

One thing that I always like to do on this show is to give up and coming talent, or brand new artists a chance or even better established artists that need a helping hand within the promotional stakes of things. In that case I decided to drop this tune on my listeners. The track is called “Stayed Tuned” by Rare Jewelz (released in 200, Uk).

I like this tune. In fact I like it a lot. It has that Little Brother feel to it, who are just huge on the Usa underground Hip hop circuit at the moment. And to give it more credence it is Gospel styled hip Hop record. Yes we are listening to a Gospel Hip Hop tune here. The Rapper called Klarity (who is original from New Jersey, Usa. Now resides in South East London. England) provides great lyrics on this track(about life in general, and how one should go about things), and the tempo and the flow of his delivery is first class. The music is sample fodder however in that it seems that they have used to obscure Soul track for this single. The single is not too fast or not too slow. Please listen to this track to get the full flavour by clicking on the link below.

One of the biggest tracks at the moment within Rn’b music full stop was dedicated towards Alicia Caley Brown. This was because it was her birthday. “Valentine” by Ryan Leslie is fast becoming everyone’s favourite and it seemed appropriate to play this track for Alicia who is a niece of mine. Happy Birthday Alicia. From the start with the Piano like riff going through the song to the gradually incorporation of a drum line or drum pattern. Ryan Leslie’s, Prince like voice eventually follows the drum line into the mix. Wow is what I’m thinking as we have only had those parts just added into the song so far. After about a further 10 seconds all the other instruments are thrown in such as the bass line and other keyboard sounds. What a track. What an Album. I stress you anyone to get this album as soon as they can. I really do. But first please have a listen to this track first by clicking on the tune below via the link situated below.

I was really cooking now and I decided with the next track to keep the heat up high with a track that has been blazing up the charts since December 2008. It’s the new track from Justin Timberlake and T.I called “If I”(released 16th December, 2008,Usa). Wow, this is so funky. I have to say that Justin Timberlake sounds like Prince. What’s with everyone wanting to sound like Prince all of sudden? In relation to the music side of things it sounds if it something that the group called Nerd would have bought out a few years ago. Its really that funky. I love the drums and especially the bass line on this songs, as it seems as if the two are joined at the hip. Credit must also be given to T.I who provides a creditable rap within this song; and also provides a verse or two where he sings himself. I can see this being huge floor filler. Please click on the link below to hear the full song.

I had already decided on playing some more Hip Hop music within the show. This came within the form of the group called Green Jade from the Uk. They were a group that I had found over the Internet whilist looking and researching for new talent within the Hip hop world. The track that I wanted to play from them was called “Life as we know it” by GreenJade featuring Chenoa (released 2008, London, England). Very futuristic sounding and I have to say that it sounds very vaguely like Outcast’s Prototype (from the Love Below/Speakerboxx – 2004 album) from a few years back but not as soulful. Love the atmospheric feel that this track has on it, and also like the light drum pattern and bass line in the background. I like the rapper on this as well(Chenoa??) She delivers a poetry styled like rap on this tune. She gives us a gritty and vivid insight into what life is like for her in her part of the world. It’s one of those tracks that you have to listen to a few times and then you will get it. It will hit you over the head in which you will not fully recover from. Give it a listen you will eventually love this track. Please click on the track link below to hear it.

Moving away from Hip Hop for a moment I decided to play a track from the man of the moment once again. That is of course Ryan Leslie. I decided on playing a second track from his recently released debut album called “Ryan Leslie” as well. The track picked up on this occasion was “I.R.I.N.A” by Ryan Leslie (released 2009 on the album called Ryan Leslie, Usa). This is a nice slow to mid tempo Rn’b cut that will appeal to most peoples. Not harsh, well sung, you can hear the words really clearly and the chorus is easily singable. The bass line is semi funky and the drums are not over powering on this track. The other instruments such as the piano and keyboards seem intent on just sticking to laying down chords. Ryan Leslie voice however fits like a glove on this track which was earlier released in the year of 2008 and was a big underground hit. The man at the moment seems not to be able to do no wrong. Please click on the link below to hear the song in full.

The next track is pure genius. Phonte Coleman of the group called Little Brother is on the “solo duty” this time for this track. Yes it’s a Hip Hop track, and yes it does have a few naughty words here and there, but I will overlook this on this occasion; because this tune touches on what many people think when working within a retail department store. He observes the various races coming into the store on trying to get bargains from which he is the Manager. This includes Mexicans, White people, Black people, Soccer Mums and Indians. The track is called “Last Day” by Phonte Coleman (released in 2007 of the mixtape by “And for Justus for all”, Usa) and is a real beauty. I did my research this time for you on where Phonte got the sample from to create this track and it was from - Onyx ft. Dead Prez "Last Days (it's yours)". I truly hope that the whole Little Brother/Foreign Exchange/9th Wonder collective get credit where credit is due because tracks like these are the real deal when it comes to Hip hop music. Please listen to this classic track

Decided to flip the script so to speak via the next choice of my next track. “Faith” by Keirra Kiki Shread (released 2006 on the album called “This is me”, Usa). Completely different song from the last one in terms of outlook in people in general. This track deals with or an attempt to deal with when we are all down in the dumps and nothings is going right for us. Keirra tells us to look to the Lord. And if more people did that there would be less troubles in the world. Keirra’s track is a Gospel track. However, it not just a Gospel track with a message. It’s a great gospel track with a message. Slow to mid tempo Rn’b styled tune. Keirra gives us a belt of her vocals right at the start of the track without any instruments accompanying her. Then a huge sounding Drum and bass line at the beginning of the track is incorporated, which is then sweetened with a Rhodes piano playing Jazz Chord progression for us. Then Keirra “Kikki” Shread joins the party with her fantastic voice of hers which gains some helps with equally good backing singers. This track is so good that I make it the best track of the album in my opinion. Please have a listen to this track. Its that good. Just click on the link below.

I was enjoying myself so much that I nearly missed the playing the second of part of the Rare Groove selection part 2 on the show. Time just rushed away with me this week. No I'm not going to tell you what I played. You will have to listen in future to find out.

I still had 4 minutes to play my last tune of the night though. “Imagine” by Lei-an (2008 release from the album called “Imagine me”, Uk). Played this track at least for 2 months now. It was originally released in December 2008, and it still sounds great. To be honest it doesn’t sound as if it was made in 2008 or 2008.Instead it sounds as if it was made the late 1980’s or early 1990’s. Its got that old school vibe about it which means that it doesn’t seem to use to much bass or drum effects throughout the track.

It has running through the whole track a really simple guitar riff that works, and every thing is built around that except Lei-an voice and her backing singers. Everyone who has heard this first time around thinks it by some kind of new sensation from the Usa. But its actually from the artist called Lei-an from West London, England, who has a voice to fall in love for. I just hope that people pick up on this track. It is really classy and deserver to have some chart success. Please listen to this track, another one that you can’t afford to miss. Please click on the link below to hear the whole track.

Well my time is now up and I'm away until next Wednesday show. Electric Soul Show - 25th February, 2009 - 105.7FM - Ipswich Town, England

Arrived a bit late into the studio. I stated a thousand apologises to my listeners and also thanked Dj Abel who hosts the show called “The Static Caravan” show for standing in for me until I arrived. I have to be honest I was only 3 minutes late, but late is late. You naughty boy Dj Mistri.

Anyway with my tail between my legs I started the show with this beauty “Everybody Love” by Maskerade (released in 2009 on a new mix tape called “American Singer” ) What singer Maskerade is. I just love his voice. It’s on that Donnell Jones tip, and you know how much I rate Donnell Jones don’t you.

Slow to Mid tempo Rn’b styled ballad type track. I just love that funky bass line and drum pattern that he drops in this track it does it allow becoming too slushy. The acoustic sounding rhythm guitar flirting in the background and simple chord progression of the piano also just gives it that edge. Please click on the link below to here the song/tune yourself.

The next Track is still one of the hottest tracks within the Rn’b gender at the moment. Ryan Leslie’s track called “Valentine” (Released 2009 – from the album called Ryan Leslie) is the track that everyone is talking about. From the start with the Piano like riff going through the song to the gradually incorporation of the drum line or drum pattern. This is then followed by Ryan Leslie’s Prince like voice into coming the mix. Wow, I’m thinking with only just those parts added into the song so far. After about a further 10 seconds all the other instruments are thrown in such as the bass line and other keyboard sounds. What a track. What an Album. I stress you to get this album. I really do. But first please have a listen to this track first by clicking on the tune below via the link situated below.

Changed it up a bit with the next track. Soulful Hip hop if it can be called that. “That’s what I’m talking about” by Pete Rock and Rell (Released 2008 on the album called “New York Finest”).

This is funky, danceable and yet so soulful at the same time. It’s the opening drum pattern and bass line that sets the whole thing up. The First 20 seconds to be precise are so funky. Then comes in Rells soulful voice together with backing singers. Wow.

Then after about 1 minute Pete Rock supplys us with a really good rap. I mean a rap with lyrics that seem to fit the flow of the song and tell a story at the same time. I can tell you that you will be nodding your head to this song. It has the right balance of Funk and Soul that don’t fight against each other but compliment each other. Please click on the link below to hear the song.

Continuing on that same Funk and Soul vibe of the previous played single. Sees me playing with a track from Hill St.Soul called “ Black Rose” (released 2008 on the album called “Black Rose). As I mentioned this song features a high percentage of funk music within its composition. Not forgetting the soul in which this group have become famed for. Acoustic guitar sounding start for this track then the funky bass line and drum line kicks in making you feel instantly funky.

However, the voice of Hilary Mwelwa (Lead Singer) and Teish O’day(Backing singer/Lead Singer) brings us back down to earth with their utter beautiful voices of there’s. Both are from the Uk and yet reminds me in parts of Angie Stone. Probably my favourite track of the album, but you might think otherwise when or if you get to her it. Please click on the link below to her the song.

Well I was feeling like a steam ship at the moment, and had gathered quite a full head of steam in regards to the music that I had already played. The next track I decided to play was to come from Maskerade again. The song on this occasion was called “Right and Wrong”(Released in 2009 on a new mix tape called “American Singer”). This is a right out and about Soul ballad. Nothing more, nothing less. A real simple drum pattern that reminds of the slow tracks from the artist called Usher when he started out and playing and performing his slower styled tracks from the album called 8701. Remember that album? Anyway this has got the same feel. Slushy, sentimental and yet very now in regards to the ballad type songs that are being released within the Rn’b field right now. Not the best track on the album. But well sung. Please click on the link below and listen.

http://www.mlifesoul.com/

This song is that not that new but features on the new album by Ryan Leslie which is called would you believe “Ryan Leslie” (released in 2009). The actual track that I was to play from the album was called “Just right”. I love this track.

Yet another track that is funky. Yes its funky. Really it is, but not so obvious, and of course its soulful. I like the fact that he brings in so many beats and natural music sounds together which when put together sound beautiful. Then there is Ryan voice which at times reminds you me of Prince then slightly of Jon B, then of Usher. I know it sound crazy but it does. Slow to mid temp track that really done well for him when it was released over here in the Uk. Don’t take my word for it. Please have a listen to the track for yourselves by clicking on the link yourselves below.

Another that from me that has a real nice funk vibe following through it, and yet has enough soul to shake at stick at is the Rn’b track called “Watching her” by Jon B whom I have just mentioned within the previous track(Released in 2008 as a single). Once again it’s the funky bass line and the drum line that sets everything up and together with a vocal sample that sounds so right. After about 30 seconds Jon B sings. He helped along by another artist that raps sometimes between and when he sings. You would have thought that this would have meant for his lyrics to sound muddled or hard to hear? But it works. Trust me it works. The singing then half rapped lyrics of both Jon B and his co-partner in crime set the scene. I’m loving this track I can tell you. Together with the funky and yet soulful vibe it makes you want to press re-wind on your cd player. Please just click on the link below to hear this song in full.

Well you’ve guessed it. It was time for me to play the Rare Groove selection part of the show.

I had already decided on playing some 1980’s styled Rn’b/Soul music. This came within the form of the group called Cool Million. Cool Million are a group that I have been championing on the show for quite a while now, and I am happy to do so. There bright and happy go lucky soul sound brightens up my day, and hopefully my listeners. I have been playing tracks from the recently released album called Going out tonight”(Released 2008) for the last 1 month and a half now. This week I decided to play “Give me my love” by Cool Million featuring CJ Anthony.

Upbeat, bright, happy go lucky and 80’s sounding are a few words that can describe this track. It’s got that Shalamar feel about it. CJ Anthony sounds like Howard Hewett (The lead singer) of Shalamar fame in my reckoning. Wow its good to hear this sound all over again, and to think it was made and released in 2008. Not 1982. Please have a listen to this. You will smile whilst listening.

Staying on the nostalgetic tip, I decided on playing a track for one of my Listeners called Elaine Mayes from Old Buckingham, Norfolk,England. It was a dedication for her from an admirer called Jason Blastock in Portsmouth, England who wished her all the best and love.

The song he wanted me to play for her was called “Lets stay together” by Al Green (Released in 1971), and have to say an excellent choice. I don’ t really need to say anymore to you as this track is a bonafide classic.

Changed the script with my next track though. It was the third track this evening that I had played from Ryan Leslie (from his album called Ryan Leslie 2009). One the big undergrounds hits from 2008 in regards to Rn’b music. Loved the Keyboard sound which opens the track this time around. This track has always been a dance floor friendly track that always seems to get the crowd on the floor. Funky, bright and easy to understand sung lyrics by Ryan Leslie; but its only when he lays down a rap in the song that it gets a little more complicated. I believe that this did well in the Usa. I can see why. Please have a listen to song below by clicking on the link.

I have been going on all night about Funk induced tracks well this has to be the funkiest track of the night that I have played. It features Nate Dogg, Warren G, and Snoop Dogg who formed the group called 213. The track called “Groupie Love”(Released in 2004 album called “The Hard Way). I believe that this tracks samples Herbie Hancocks track called “Chameleon”(Released in 1973 from the album called Head Hunters). Wow this track is pure funk, and Hip hop music at the same time. The three guys above that I mentioned must have had a lot of fun making this tune up. Just rolls and rolls and rolls along. This is West Coast hip hop at its best. The groove and the funk vibe on this track are incredible. And the lyrics and flow of the rap provided especially by Snoop Dog just wants to make you smile time after time after time. Please just listen to this great track. Its that good. Please click on the link below.

It seems as if I have swallowed a funk pill or something, as my next track once again has elements of a funk vibe all the way through it. However this is tempered by a very small measure of Soul music vibe to enter the fray. The track in question is called “Find a way” by A tribe called Quest (Released 1998 from the album called “The Love Movement”). A glorious track which allows us to hear a great raps from Q-Tip and Phife Dawag. This music is so funky, but not as funky as the previous one before. I will say it. This is the best track on the album in my opinion and the last official one from the group. I believe that this album has already gained classic status within the Hip Hop world. I just love this song. The interplay between Q-Tip and Phife Dawg is so good with their raps. Please click on the song below to hear the song below.

Well, I ended the show with the playing the second of part of the Rare Groove selection part 2 on the show. Time just rushed away with me this week. No I'm not going to tell you what I played. Listen in, and you will find out.

Well, time is now up.....and I'm away until next Wednesday show.
