Played this Hiphop track about 2 weeks ago on this very show. It was quality then and is quality now. Nothing changed. The lyrics and flow delivery here supplied by Phonte are great; and the samples and beats given by Nicolay are sublime. This is another side of HipHop music that is sometimes forgotten by the media in general. Just on link below to here the song yourselves.
I decided early on in flipping the switch as soon as possible as I wanted to get as many different music styles into this week show as possible. With that I selected "Good Morning" by Vivivan Jones (1980). Its a plain and simple Lovers Rock Reggae track that works. Boy I love this mans voice. It could easily be suited to one of those 1970's style ballard groups such as the Stylalistics, etc. Many people in the Reggae world have liken his voice to the great Gregory Isaacs (Known as he Cool Ruler in Jamaica, and the Reggae World) Some people have even called him England's very own - Cool Ruler!
The music is soulful. Boy is it soulful, and yet doesn't forgets its Reggae music roots. A lovely Reggae beat, with soft melodies in the background that allows Vivian Jones voice takes full advantage of. If this was released again I could see it charting today in a big way. Its that good. Please click on the Link below to here the full song.
The next track up was something that was sent to me in the post to me. In fact it was a fully flegded new album from the group known as "The Chestnut Brothers"(Atlanta, USA). The album that I received was called "Retro Soul"(2008 Release), and featured 13 brand new songs from them.
For this weeks show I decided to play for my listeners this particular cut from the album called "Whole Lotta you in me". I just loved everything about this single. The start or build up of the track is great. Then that voice kicks in. Reminds me of every so slightly of Ron Banks ( The former lead singer of the 1970's Soul group called the Dramatics). A nice mid tempo Soul cut with just a slight tinge of funk within the composition. In my opinion many people on purchasing this album will quickly make this their favourite cut. Reminds me so much of the early 1980's soul/funk music scene as tunes like this were the norm. This is a good tune to listen out for and buy I think. Well, as I was playing up and coming artists on the show. I decided to keep on this vein by playing an old favourite of the Electric Soul Show. The gentleman's name is BA NUSANCE. Many regular listeners of the show will know that I have playing this gentleman's tunes over the last 5 to 6 weeks. He heralds from London, here in England, and the tune that I was going to play this week for the listeners was called "Run to you". I will not go into detail about the track as I have played it recently before on the show. If you want to read up on the track please have a read of the various other blog enteries that this tune features on.Or better still click on the link below to listen to the tune in full via his own myspace website. Next track up was a bonafide Rn'b tune by Joe (Full name Joe Thomas). And it was with pride that I played the next track by an artist that doesn't seem to have to really have hit the big time. He reminds of slightly of Donnell Jones (USA) in a sense. Both are well respected in the area of Rn'b music by all and sundry, but both of them never seems to gain a big hit within the national music charts. I tried to prove a point here by playing this track from him which comes from his new album called "New Man"(2008 release). The track from the album that I decided to play is called "Chamelon". It is a slow to mid temp track. But what makes this track so good is his voice. Its so silky. However, the music that supports his voice is great. Simple Drum pattern and little piano stabs in the background in fact. Joe (Or his full name - Joe Thomas - USA) takes full advantage of this with that fantastic voice that he has. The background singers as well help out no end as well on this track. Just a brilliant song in which my listeners must have a loved. I did.
Well, looking up at the clock in the studio,I noticed that time was running away from me already. It was well past 9 o'clock. It was time for the Rare Groove selection part 1 in the show to take place. For those of you who are new to the show. Each week I play 3 songs within this section of the show which allows me to play bonafide Rare grooves, or tunes from yester-year on the show. However, if you want to know what I played on the show via this you will have listen into the show in future.
With the Rare Groove selection part 1 over and done with now. I decided on dropping some Soulful House music. Over the previous weeks I have tried to inform my listeners that House and Garage music should not invoke images of "Glow sticks, and people ripping of their shirt and other notions". This was and is the Soulful side of House music that we like to play on the show.
With no further comments to make about House music. I selected the track called "Keeping my my mind" (1993 release) by the group called the Black Rascals featuring Roger Harris. Starts off with a fairly standard four to the floor House drum pattern that is usual for House music. However, when the chords, bass line and that saxophone riff kicks in then its a different matter. Wow. Then the Roger Harris voice appears, and it all fits together. What makes it even nicer, is the background harmonies that have been looped, and fitted against Roger Harris voice when ever the chorus of the song is reached. This is a lovely tune. Goes to prove that there is indeed Soul within House music.

Earlier on in the show I had already played a track from the group called "The Chestnut Brothers"(Atlanta, Usa) with their track called "Whole Lotta you in me".This time I wanted to play the track called "Girls" from the same album. "Girls" starts of sounding very much influenced by Indian music. The drums especially. However, when the vocalist kicks in, so does the Soul. I really love this. It seems as if there are two lead vocalists within this tune each taking the responsibility of singer each versus separately and their love of girls. Nice and funky an bumpy sounding single. But never forgetting its soul music roots. Good track. Have a listen by clicking on the link below.
Next track I surprised even myself let alone my listeners. I selected this without thinking; and A Tribe called Quest track to boot. In fact with the next track that I was going to play for my listeners I hadn't played in months. This track was indeed called "Find a way" (1998 release) by A Tribe called Quest (New York, Usa).Wow this still sounds so good. And one of the reasons why this group is still loved in a big way even today.
This just bumps along and makes your head nod at the same time. Wonderful single from the group. The interplay between the rappers of Q-tip and Phife Dawg are just so spot on; and the lyrics makes you smile to yourself. One track that anyone outside Hip Hop music will love just because of the track itself. If you want to listen to the track please listen to it here:
Because the former track put me in such a good mood into how good it sounded. I decided to stay with HipHop music for a little while longer. "I see now" by Little Brother featuring Kanye West,Usa(2005 release) was the next track up. What was bugging me was, what soul or jazz music track had they sampled to create that melodic groove in the background for this record? I believe the Dj who is responsible is called 9th Wonder. Maybe he will tell us?
Well this joint sounds so nice, and the groove is set at the right tempo. Phonte and Kanye West took turns at the versus within this Rap joint. And boy did they do it justice. The flow was perfect from each rapper as they effortlessly went about their different stories in which had to tell. I love this type of Hiphop music. Not brash or hard. Just so smooth. I just hoped my listeners loved this as much as I did.Want to listen? Well click here on the link directly below.
Was starting to turn into a HipHop music junkie so I had to act quickly here. Looked in my bag and found the antidote "Don't let go" by Eric Benet (from his album called Love and Life, Sept, 2008 release).Did this cure me? Well the opening bars of this track is heavily influenced by Hip Hop music. So maybe not.The drum pattern is just tailored made from my previous artists that I have played. However when Eric's sings the line "Don't let go" every worry goes away, and you are now comforted by the fact that this will be a stand up Rn'b Track.
Not too slow, and yet not too fast makes you pay attention to this song. Eric is another heavily under rated artist in the world of Rn'b music, which seems to play heavily on image rather than content. Yet another excellent cut from his latest album. Please check the album out and have a listen. In act just click on the link below and listen to this track yourselves.
From Rn'b onto Lovers Rock Reggae music again. I just wanted to end the show on a soulful vibe. Well I think achieved that with the use of this track. "The very best" by Intense (1988 release - London, England). Now this is close to being my most favourite Lovers Rock Reggae track of all time.
The lead singer voice on this is sublime. It really is. His voice reminds me a little of David Hinds from the group called "Steel Pulse" (Birmingham, England),but his voice is even sweeter! The guitar and drum patterns as well as the bassline are very simple sounding. However, the piano riff and the syth strings sounds in the background make this cut dreamy. This single gets a 10 out of 10 for me. Many people who state that do not like Lovers Rock Reggae or Reggae music in general will do when they listen to this. I wish they would re-release this again. Its that good in my opinion. Wanna here? Click on the link just directly below this note.
Time was now racing ahead for me to play The Rare Groove selection Part 2 of the show. I had 10 minutes left to play this as well. I mentioned earlier on within this report that each and every week I play 3 songs from yester-year or bonafide Rare grooves. However, if you want to hear them then please listen into the show so that you can hear them.
Well, time is now up and I'm away until next Wednesday show.
