Dj Mistri its Wednesday? Are you ready?

Well, the title of this piece asks if I'm ready? Of course I am. I ready and raring to go in fact. The date of this week show is the 26th November, 2008. And the track that I started the show with was called "Happiness" (2004 release) by the Hiphop/Rn'b music group called Foreign Exchange (North Carolina,Usa and Holland).

Played this Hiphop track about 2 weeks ago on this very show. It was quality then and is quality now. Nothing changed. The lyrics and flow delivery here supplied by Phonte are great; and the samples and beats given by Nicolay are sublime. This is another side of HipHop music that is sometimes forgotten by the media in general. Just on link below to here the song yourselves.

I decided early on in flipping the switch as soon as possible as I wanted to get as many different music styles into this week show as possible. With that I selected "Good Morning" by Vivivan Jones (1980). Its a plain and simple Lovers Rock Reggae track that works. Boy I love this mans voice. It could easily be suited to one of those 1970's style ballard groups such as the Stylalistics, etc. Many people in the Reggae world have liken his voice to the great Gregory Isaacs (Known as he Cool Ruler in Jamaica, and the Reggae World) Some people have even called him England's very own - Cool Ruler!

The music is soulful. Boy is it soulful, and yet doesn't forgets its Reggae music roots. A lovely Reggae beat, with soft melodies in the background that allows Vivian Jones voice takes full advantage of. If this was released again I could see it charting today in a big way. Its that good. Please click on the Link below to here the full song.

The next track up was something that was sent to me in the post to me. In fact it was a fully flegded new album from the group known as "The Chestnut Brothers"(Atlanta, USA). The album that I received was called "Retro Soul"(2008 Release), and featured 13 brand new songs from them.

For this weeks show I decided to play for my listeners this particular cut from the album called "Whole Lotta you in me". I just loved everything about this single. The start or build up of the track is great. Then that voice kicks in. Reminds me of every so slightly of Ron Banks ( The former lead singer of the 1970's Soul group called the Dramatics). A nice mid tempo Soul cut with just a slight tinge of funk within the composition. In my opinion many people on purchasing this album will quickly make this their favourite cut. Reminds me so much of the early 1980's soul/funk music scene as tunes like this were the norm. This is a good tune to listen out for and buy I think. Please have a listen to this track by clicking on the link below.

Well, as I was playing up and coming artists on the show. I decided to keep on this vein by playing an old favourite of the Electric Soul Show. The gentleman's name is BA NUSANCE. Many regular listeners of the show will know that I have playing this gentleman's tunes over the last 5 to 6 weeks. He heralds from London, here in England, and the tune that I was going to play this week for the listeners was called "Run to you". I will not go into detail about the track as I have played it recently before on the show. If you want to read up on the track please have a read of the various other blog enteries that this tune features on.Or better still click on the link below to listen to the tune in full via his own myspace website. Please click on the link below to be able to do so.

Next track up was a bonafide Rn'b tune by Joe (Full name Joe Thomas). And it was with pride that I played the next track by an artist that doesn't seem to have to really have hit the big time. He reminds of slightly of Donnell Jones (USA) in a sense. Both are well respected in the area of Rn'b music by all and sundry, but both of them never seems to gain a big hit within the national music charts. I tried to prove a point here by playing this track from him which comes from his new album called "New Man"(2008 release). The track from the album that I decided to play is called "Chamelon". It is a slow to mid temp track. But what makes this track so good is his voice. Its so silky. However, the music that supports his voice is great. Simple Drum pattern and little piano stabs in the background in fact. Joe (Or his full name - Joe Thomas - USA) takes full advantage of this with that fantastic voice that he has. The background singers as well help out no end as well on this track. Just a brilliant song in which my listeners must have a loved. I did.

Well, looking up at the clock in the studio,I noticed that time was running away from me already. It was well past 9 o'clock. It was time for the Rare Groove selection part 1 in the show to take place. For those of you who are new to the show. Each week I play 3 songs within this section of the show which allows me to play bonafide Rare grooves, or tunes from yester-year on the show. However, if you want to know what I played on the show via this you will have listen into the show in future.

With the Rare Groove selection part 1 over and done with now. I decided on dropping some Soulful House music. Over the previous weeks I have tried to inform my listeners that House and Garage music should not invoke images of "Glow sticks, and people ripping of their shirt and other notions". This was and is the Soulful side of House music that we like to play on the show.

With no further comments to make about House music. I selected the track called "Keeping my my mind" (1993 release) by the group called the Black Rascals featuring Roger Harris. Starts off with a fairly standard four to the floor House drum pattern that is usual for House music. However, when the chords, bass line and that saxophone riff kicks in then its a different matter. Wow. Then the Roger Harris voice appears, and it all fits together. What makes it even nicer, is the background harmonies that have been looped, and fitted against Roger Harris voice when ever the chorus of the song is reached. This is a lovely tune. Goes to prove that there is indeed Soul within House music.
Please have a listen to the tune at your own leisure here by clicking on this link below.

Earlier on in the show I had already played a track from the group called "The Chestnut Brothers"(Atlanta, Usa) with their track called "Whole Lotta you in me".This time I wanted to play the track called "Girls" from the same album. "Girls" starts of sounding very much influenced by Indian music. The drums especially. However, when the vocalist kicks in, so does the Soul. I really love this. It seems as if there are two lead vocalists within this tune each taking the responsibility of singer each versus separately and their love of girls. Nice and funky an bumpy sounding single. But never forgetting its soul music roots. Good track. Have a listen by clicking on the link below.

Next track I surprised even myself let alone my listeners. I selected this without thinking; and A Tribe called Quest track to boot. In fact with the next track that I was going to play for my listeners I hadn't played in months. This track was indeed called "Find a way" (1998 release) by A Tribe called Quest (New York, Usa).Wow this still sounds so good. And one of the reasons why this group is still loved in a big way even today.

This just bumps along and makes your head nod at the same time. Wonderful single from the group. The interplay between the rappers of Q-tip and Phife Dawg are just so spot on; and the lyrics makes you smile to yourself. One track that anyone outside Hip Hop music will love just because of the track itself. If you want to listen to the track please listen to it here:

Because the former track put me in such a good mood into how good it sounded. I decided to stay with HipHop music for a little while longer. "I see now" by Little Brother featuring Kanye West,Usa(2005 release) was the next track up. What was bugging me was, what soul or jazz music track had they sampled to create that melodic groove in the background for this record? I believe the Dj who is responsible is called 9th Wonder. Maybe he will tell us?

Well this joint sounds so nice, and the groove is set at the right tempo. Phonte and Kanye West took turns at the versus within this Rap joint. And boy did they do it justice. The flow was perfect from each rapper as they effortlessly went about their different stories in which had to tell. I love this type of Hiphop music. Not brash or hard. Just so smooth. I just hoped my listeners loved this as much as I did.Want to listen? Well click here on the link directly below.

Was starting to turn into a HipHop music junkie so I had to act quickly here. Looked in my bag and found the antidote "Don't let go" by Eric Benet (from his album called Love and Life, Sept, 2008 release).Did this cure me? Well the opening bars of this track is heavily influenced by Hip Hop music. So maybe not.The drum pattern is just tailored made from my previous artists that I have played. However when Eric's sings the line "Don't let go" every worry goes away, and you are now comforted by the fact that this will be a stand up Rn'b Track.

Not too slow, and yet not too fast makes you pay attention to this song. Eric is another heavily under rated artist in the world of Rn'b music, which seems to play heavily on image rather than content. Yet another excellent cut from his latest album. Please check the album out and have a listen. In act just click on the link below and listen to this track yourselves.

From Rn'b onto Lovers Rock Reggae music again. I just wanted to end the show on a soulful vibe. Well I think achieved that with the use of this track. "The very best" by Intense (1988 release - London, England). Now this is close to being my most favourite Lovers Rock Reggae track of all time.

The lead singer voice on this is sublime. It really is. His voice reminds me a little of David Hinds from the group called "Steel Pulse" (Birmingham, England),but his voice is even sweeter! The guitar and drum patterns as well as the bassline are very simple sounding. However, the piano riff and the syth strings sounds in the background make this cut dreamy. This single gets a 10 out of 10 for me. Many people who state that do not like Lovers Rock Reggae or Reggae music in general will do when they listen to this. I wish they would re-release this again. Its that good in my opinion. Wanna here? Click on the link just directly below this note.

Time was now racing ahead for me to play The Rare Groove selection Part 2 of the show. I had 10 minutes left to play this as well. I mentioned earlier on within this report that each and every week I play 3 songs from yester-year or bonafide Rare grooves. However, if you want to hear them then please listen into the show so that you can hear them.

Well, time is now up and I'm away until next Wednesday show. If you want to leave any comments that I have made about any tracks that were played; or any stories that I mentioned relating to the tracks as well. Then please add your own personal comments below via clicking on the "Yellow or blue Comments button" Ok? Don't be shy to have you say.

Wednesday, 19 November 2008

Yes its Wednesday - That means Electric Soul Show day.

Well I must say that time has flown by since last week. Wednesday already? Well it is so lets get on with it. This week I opened up the show with an Urban Gospel track called "Faith"(2006)by Kierra "Kikki" Shread (from the album called "This is me" - 2006 release!). This girl can sing. And is one the best tracks on this album. I will tell you even further that this album has better made Rn'b tracks than many of today so called contemporary made Rn'b albums. This is a really great album I can't stress this enough. I tell you I could have easily chosen 9 tracks at least to play from this album. Just have a listen by clicking on the link below.

The lyrics are spot on and the groove is irresistible. Great start for my listeners I thought. I continued on that Soulful vibe with my next selection.”Got to get to know you"(2006) by Ledisi (From the album called "Lost and Found) was the next track up. What another great singer Ledisi is. One of the finds of 2006 in my opinion. I have to say this is a lovely track. Soul music with just a light essence of Rn'b vibe added to the pot. Reminds me of (every so slightly) of Angie Stone vocally. Or is it that just me? They have been calling this type of Soul music " Neo Soul". Oh well, "Neo Soul" it is then. Just have a click on the link below to listen to the tune!

Changed the script completely with my next track selection. "One dance just won't do"(1985 release) by Audrey Hall. Yes Lovers Rock Reggae had just entered the building. The original was done by Beres Hammond in 1979. However, I like this version the best. It sounds more soulful than the Beres Hammond original. But that’s just me. Love the simple piano and guitar structure within the track that allows Audrey voice to soar. Great track. Please have a listen to this classic Lovers Rock Reggae tune (Please click on the link below)

B A NUSANCE you've heard of him haven't you? Well, I've played his music on this show for the last 3 weeks or so. Where have you been? Well, if you haven't heard from him he's based in London, England; and is a musician, singer and producer. This week I decided to play "Can't have my love" (2008 Release) by him. I still love this song. Hip Hop driven beats sweeten by some soaring Female vocals. Makes this a single that you want to listen to the end. One of my favourites from B A Nusance. Go to his web page to listen to the tune in question.

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=209985567

Just before I got a to play the next track for my listeners I received an e-mail into the studio e-mail incoming tray. A friend of Elaine, from Old Buckingham, Norwich wanted me to play a track for her. No name was left or anything so I had nothing to dedicate out to.

The next track I decided to dedicate out to Elaine anyway. I will say it now. It is my favourite track at the moment. It’s called "The Hunger" (Sept 30th, 2008 release) by Eric Benet. I just love this track. These types of tracks are normally released by the King of Rn'b (who in my opinion) is Donnell Jones. As I mentioned each time I have played this track recently. I believe that this is how modern day Rn'b music should be sounding. It features heavy dollops of Soul, and then a slight essence of Hip Hop music thrown in for good measure. Not the other way around. This is his official second single release from his latest album called "Love and Life" (Released 30th Sept, 2008). And I have to say that get this album. You will be sorry. Click in the link below to hear the song.

As soon as I played that track. I got an e-mail from Colonel C (a former Dj Radio presenter on this very station) stating that he himself loved this track. See? Quality attracts.

Anyway, with the Colonel e-mailing in and stating within his e-mail that he loved that previous track I decided to play the next tune for him. "Take off the blues" (9th October, 2008 release) by Foreign Exchange was my next selection. I have to confess I have played this recently (and on more then one occasion), but the sheer quality of this tune made me play it all over again for my listeners this week.

Nicolay (the beats man, from Holland, a member of Foreign Exchange) lays down the groove, whereas Darien Brockington (the guest vocalist on this track) has the vocals locked down properly so that it all works together perfectly. No e-mails from the Colonel this time. But I'm sure that I could hear him scribbling the name of the artists, and the name tune for this track in the background! Have a listen to the track. Click below.

Well, it was that time again? You know? The Rare Groove Selection - Part 1. It’s the part of the show whereby I play 3 forgotten, or bonafide rare grooves to the listeners. However, if you want to know what I played. You will have to listen into the show. I keep saying this but you don't listen do you?

Directly after the Rare Groove Selection part one of the show. I decided to stay put and keep on playing more Soulful cuts or tracks for my listeners.

It doesn't come no better then this.“Slow” by Don- E Featuring Lornette Ford (London, England - 2006 release). Wow. That’s all I have to say. I just love this. First of all why can’t we hear more stuff like this? And secondly artists from the Uk. Please start to try to make more tracks like this. If you want to compete against the almighty Americans in regards to Soul or Rn’b music then this is one route to follow. This is probably my favourite track from Don-E. Hits all the right buttons for me. It so good. Well-done sir!Go to Don-E's Myspace website to hear this song.

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=54659434

Decided staying soulful yet again on my next track, but this time it would be on a House music tip. Can this ever be so? Well, yes if your name is “Moody man” With a name like that I can hear you wondering that just isn’t possible. He can never be soulful with a name like that. Surely? Well, I’ll give his proper name. Kenny Dixon Junior. The track in question is called “Your Sweet Loving” (2000 release)Wow this is so soulful, and church like that it hurts. Beautiful grooves laid down ever so carefully by the Moody Mann. Sorry Kenny Dixon Junior. I love the addition of the "cooing type vocals" that were used this on single. However, what I would love to know is what jazz sample/s he used on this track. This is a side of House music that I will always jump to. I just hoped my listeners would too. Please have a listen to this music, as well below if you didn’t listen to the show.

With House music still on the menu. Well, Soulful House music that is. I decided to drop for this next track my listeners. “Paradise”(1995)by Cassioware (New Jersey, USA and the main vocalist) and Blaze (New Jersey, USA the musicians and the producers of the single). This wasn’t as delicate as “Your sweet Loving”. The intro of this song starts with harder sounding four to the floor drum pattern for instance. However when the electronic bass line, simple piano lines and soft syths all come out to play then we all start to have a party.

The main vocalist (Cassioware) are harmonised together with the tight but yet soft vocals of the Blaze team, which are Josh Milan and Kevin Hedges. I just love this single. It gets even better when we are 3 quarters of the way through the song as the piano lines start to take a more dominate lead lines in the melody. It really is so soulful and such a great track, but wait for the track when it incorporates that piano riff (towards the Middle and ending of the song!). Great single. Click on the link and listen to it!

Changed the script without a moment’s notice with my next track laid down here. This time we are coming home to England again. The group are called Siani, and they come from the city of Birmingham, here in England. The track that I selected was called “Love is” (2005 release). Loved that rhymatic guitar of the start of this track. Doesn’t at all sound at all like a gospel track in the traditional sense. That’s what makes such a great single. This sounds so much like a track that Destiny Child would attempt if they were still around. The lead singer of this group sounds great. But so does the backing singers. In fact they enhance the song better then the lead singer does. A real bouncy song, with true to life lyrics to boot. Please listen to this track by pressing the link below.

As I looked up at the clock I noticed that time was racing away from me again. That meant that I’d better play The Rare Groove Selection - Part 2. It’s the part of the show whereby I play 3 forgotten, or bonafide Rare grooves to the listeners. However, if you want to know what I played. You will have to listen into the show. I keep saying this but you don't listen do you?

Directly after playing the Rare Groove selection track I decided on staying within that area and playing “Open your eyes”(1980) by Bobby Caldwell. In my opinion such an underrated musician and singer songwriter. Has done many creditable tracks over the yearsl and this is another. Lovely voice that he has over a bass synth like bass line. A real Nice track have a listen to the track yourself by clicking on the link below.

Played the last two tracks of the show just in time as well as I had the other presenter waiting to do his show. First up was “What’s Up” (1999 release) by Donnell Jones and featuring Left Eye Lopez. What more can I say about a true Rn'b classic, that just oozes Soul. It still sounds so good. The rap passage by Left Eye Lopez compliments the vocals laid down by the smooth as “Silk” Donnell Jones vocals. The groove just bumps along and makes your head nod. Was this the tune of 1999 for Rn’b music? Maybe? You can decide yourselves by listening to the tune directly underneath this notice.

The very last track ended with a Lovers Rock Reggae tune. And a classic to boot. “At the Club” (1980) by Victor Romero Evans (London, England). Such a simple tune. The guitar rhythm work is simple enough. The drum line and the bass line are just as simple. But its this simplicity that allows the vocalist to really put in a really singable emotional vocal into the track. I really do love this track. Here instead of me going on about it listen to it by click on this.

Well that’s me done until next week. Please if you want to leave any comments that have been made in this week blog page. You can do so by clicking on the "Comments" button below. There you will be allowed to enter in what you want about this week show. Please tell your friends about the show. Ok?

re: 2nd Show in November, 2008 - Yes Christmas is now around the corner!

Another week meant another "Electric Soul Show" to take place (12th November, 2008).So from 20:30pm (English time)I started off the show with this track."Cool"(2006)from Cheryl Pepsii Riley (New York,USA) from the album called "Let me be the One" (2006 release!). A wonderful slice of Soul music to open the show up with. A really nice song which goes to show you how talented this lady is vocally. Not too sure if she has a current record deal though? Are you listening to me Record labels??You can listen to the song yourselves here if you want? (Please click on link below)

www.cherylpepsiiriley.com/mpeg/cool25sec.mpg

The next song that I decided to lay down and play on the show came down to my continuance of playing Lovers Rock Reggae music on the Show. Of late I will be honest. I have haven't given this gender of music the time of day in regards to the other types music that I play my the show.

This week I decided to readdress the balance on the show and decided to play this. "Put it on"(1981 release) by Sandra Cross (London, England). Now I haven't heard this song for a least 20 years! Wow has time flown so fast?

As the time span of this tune has increased. The quality and class of this particular tune has not diminished what so ever. A truly beautiful song, with good lyrics and all led by a great vocalist sees me falling in love with this track all over again. I hoped my listeners appreciated this tune as well as I did? Click on tune below if you want to here the track.

The next track up is from B A NUSANCE (London, England). Do I need to give this gentleman any more props? He has featured on the show for the last month for instance. On this occasion I decided on playing a track that he sent across to me called "Anything"(2008 release). Played this last week to be honest, and I have to say I glad that I played it again. Different style attempted by BA on this track. He is armed with just a Guitar, a couple of backing vocalists and himself on lead. If you want to here more of this track or any other that he has then please click on this link and you will be able to do so.

www.myspace.com/banusance

Decided on some Rap Music at this point of the show to keep a different variety of styles flowing throughout the program.I went with this track called "Happiness"(2004 release from the album called "Connected") by Foreign Exchange. I have to say that this is just a wonderful piece of music. Lovely melodic music in the background. Soft and layered sounding to be honest which is no bad thing. (These beats were laid down by Nicolay,(Holland) - who is part of Foreign Exchange)

The main rap lyrics are delivered by the Rapper called Big Pooh (Real name Thomas Jones) (North Carolina,Usa), and some of the singing on the track is done by Phonte (Real name Phonte Coleman) (North Carloina, Usa). Both work wonderfully well against one another. I love the flow of that Rap lyrics that Big Pooh puts down here. You could actually imagine you, or someone else that you know doing what he says in his rhymes. Listen out for the line in the song that goes "Good People, Good loving, Good music in my life it makes me happy". It all makes sense. Great record. Check out this album at the very least. It well worth the purchase.

With Rap music in my mind I decided to stay with it. "Listen Baby"(2005 release - from the album called "All or Nothing") by Fat Joe (New York, Usa) and Mashonda (New York, Usa) was the next track up. I love this song. It very modern sounding to be fair. In that I meant that it a case of Rn'b music and Rap music meeting full on here. It seems as if they (Fat Joe) have used as a main sample for this particular track ("Ain't no mountain high" by Marvin Gaye). It works well, and is nicely incorporated into this track. In fact it is over this sample within the song that Mashonda is allowed to sing through it. It is her vocals on this part of the track that is/was spot on, and she must take as much credit as Fat Joe on this track. I would love to have seen the video that would have accompanied this song when it was released. Nice tune for my listeners I think?

Another tune that I played last week was up again on the show for this week. "The Hunger"(2008 - released 30th Sept, 2008 on the Album called Love and Life) by Eric Benet (Milwaukee, Usa). This to me is how current or modern Rn'b music should be sounding. Rn'b music as strange as it may seem should not be allowed to forget it Soul music past. Instead of me going into a rage on how today's Rn'b music has lost its Soul. Please have a listen to this excellent new single from Eric Benet and then you will see what I mean. A must buy. Great single. Please Just click on the link provided below to hear for yourself.

The next single up was another on the show to come from the UK. However, this time the artist was not from London, England. But from Southampton. His name is Craig David. The song that I dropped is/was "Last Night" (2001 release - from the album called "Born to do it"). In my opinion the best album that Craig David has done so far. Nearly every track on the album is a winner. So many tracks to choose from on this album, and to play for my listeners. However I decided on this one. Still sounds great after all these years. Whenever Craig David decides to sing over a moderately paced Rn'b Rhythm such as this his voice come to the fore. All the fuss that was made over Craig David and this album (Born to do it) was justified. Make sure you update your album collection by getting this. Well worth the purchase. Click below to listen to the tune.

At this point of the show I looked up, and noticed that it was time for the Rare Groove Selection. This is the part of the show that I play tracks from yesteryear or bonifide Rare Grooves that people may have forgotten. There are 2 parts of the show. In each part 3 x tracks. If you want to know what I played you will have to listen to the show next week!

After the last track within the Rare Groove Selection was played I decided on changing the vibe of the show. Well, for two songs anyway. I went along the path of playing Soulful House music.

First track up was "Hold On"(1999 release) by Romanthony (New Jersey, Usa). This tracks starts off with a Martin Luther King type speech going right through the track for about 1 x minute supported by some soft and layering chords in the background. Then Romanthony's vocals kicks in. Pure Bliss. Then supporting music follows on. Even more bliss. Who says House music is about pounding and driving bass lines and drums patterns at 150 bpms? This is proper House music that allows us Soul music heads to get into this music without having any prejudices about this gender of music. If you ever see this get it. Its that good. Or even better listen to it here!

As promised to my listeners I would play another Soulful House tune. "Going through the motions"(1993 release) by Keisha Jenkins (New Jersey, USA). A lovely combination of Soft Jazz music and Soul music within the contexts of a simple House music drum pattern. Helped along by a nice church like vocal delivery from Keisha Jenkins it works wonders throughout this cut. It would be unfair not to mention that the production team called "Blaze"(New Jersey, USA) who helped in the creation of this track as well. They were they producers of this track, and also wrote the lyrics of the tune as well as Keisha. I have to say that it was a pleasure to drop this. In fact it had me bopping along in my presenters seat during the length of the song. Have a listen to the tune. Click on the link below.

Next track up saw me veer away from the Soulful House music sound to Lovers Rock Reggae!

"Its True"(1981) by Donna Rhoden (London, England) was played on last weeks show. And I make no apologies of playing within the context of this weeks show. A true classic that had a few of the office staff of Ipswich Community Radio Office staff come through and ask what the artist and the title of this song was. A bonafide Lovers Rock Reggae anthem this track is. And if I get the same response as I did when I played this track this week. I play it more often.

Staying soulful, but on a Rn'b music tip allowed me to drop this for my listeners. "I'm Fee" (2008 - 30th Sept, 2008 release from the album called - "Listen") by Terry Dexter(Detriot, Usa). It sounds very Modern. However, she (Terry Dexter) manages to keep it very Soulful at the same time. She has a lovely voice. Reminds me very slight of Mary J Blige if that makes sense? Please don't miss out on this. If you see the album pick it up, and give it a listen if they will allow you to at your local record store. And then buy. Ok?

Looking up at the clock within the studio, I noticed that I was cutting it fine. About 13 minutes left for the show to end. Its then that I decided to finish of the show by playing the Rare Groove Selection - Part 2 of the show. (Like I mention earlier on within this report. If you want to hear what I played you will have to listen into the show!).

Well that was it for this weeks show. I hoped you the listeners liked it as well?

re: History in the Making, and then the Electric Soul Show.

After the Global impact of what had just had happened within the USA, and their appointment of a Black senator (Barack Obama) to become the new president of the United States. I went about trying to play a inspirational "set" on the Electric Soul Show, on the 5th November, 2008.

The news about Barack Obama and his achievements really put me a good mood to try and play an extra nice set for my listeners.

Over the last couple of weeks within the show I started playing Lovers Rock Reggae tunes to the listeners. It is a musical category that is highly under rated even within the musical category of Reggae music, let alone within the Music industry in general.

With that in mind I opened up playing the shows first track as a Lovers Rock Reggae track. "Your Love" (2006 release) by Janet Kay (London, England) and Carol Thompson (London, England) is a great example of what the music buying public have been missing out on. Both of them have such Soulful voices over this lovely lilting, yet soulful Reggae rhythm. It is a great record. It is such a shame to us the music listener that we aren't able to listen to such artists such because of promotional problems of their material. Have a listen to this track here though by clicking on the link below.

Played this last week, and decided to play this track again. "Free Fall"(2008 release - from new debut album called "Music in my Soul")by Leigh Jones (California, USA). In my opinion one of the best tracks from the album. This girl can sing, and seems to love the music of soul. Already on her own myspace page she has built up a firm following. Classy track that allows us to hear her great voice. I'm sure she is going to go far. Please check your Music stores for her album. Click on the link below to here her new single.

Another new track, from another new album was being played on the Electric Soul Show this week. "I'm Free"(2008) by Terry Dexter(Detroit, USA). Terry has been around since 1999, but touches down with her latest long player also called "I'm Free" ( official release date - 30th September, 2008).

I love this single, its got that Angie Stone vocal vibe about it. I also like the modern neo soul/rnb style music approach that supports her wonderful voice. The only other track that "Holds a candle" to this tune on the album is "Be with me". Another contender for best track on the album for me. Watch out for this lady, and her album. Listen to the song here. Click on the link below.

I decided on carrying the torch for Lovers Rock Reggae music much further this week, as it has been poorly represented on the show of late. I did the gender no harm at all with the selection of this track. "Sitting and Waiting"(1981 release) by Dennis Brown(Kingston, Jamaica). One of the truly great tracks in Jamaican reggae music history in my opinion. Not just for Lovers Rock Reggae. Dennis Brown, is no longer with us (as he died in the year of 1999). However, this track will go down as possibly his greatest track. Dennis had probably the smoothest voice in Reggae. Other Reggae fans might state otherwise. But even they will have to say that this is a quality tune. A simply made track. A nice bass line, a simple drum and guitar pattern, and then there's Dennis voice. Wow. Whenever this is dropped at a Reggae Dance it never fails to generate a vibe. In fact I dedicated this out to Elaine Mayes (Old Buckingham, Norfolk,England), who had e-mail in for me to put on a good track for her? I did just that. I hope that liked it Elaine?

I really had got the Lovers Rock Reggae music vibe in my system now. As the next track was another tune within that category. However, this time it was to feature a vocalist from England. The single is called "Its True"(1981) by Donna Rhodan (London, England). This track is one of the most important tunes within the Lover Rock Reggae category apart from "Silly Games" from Janet Kay (London, England) (1979).

"Its true"
is such a wonderful track. Sounds like the vocalist is really young as it has that youthful vibe about it. In truth I haven't played this in about 15 years! It did bring back memories of the early 1980's for me; and the love that people here in England had for this gender of music at that time. It still sounds very soulful for a Reggae track, and it has very faint influences of Jazz music within the makeup of the song. However, the Reggae bass line, and the simple drum and guitar passages makes Donna voice soar over the music. Great track. Don't miss this one. Click on the link below.

The next track I have been playing for 3 weeks straight now has become a firm favourite with me. Its the new Eric Benet track called "The Hunger"(2008 - Soulful, Rn'B track), from his recently released album called "Love and Life" ( Released on the 9th September, 2008). Wonderful track. Nothing but niceness here. I really do hope that he has a smash hit with this track. Its that good. Check it out at your local record store and purchase a copy. But you can listen to the track below this note. Just click on the link.

The next couple of tracks were from artists that had taken the time to send me material of their own recently made tracks. BA NUSANCE, from Chelsea, London, is fast becoming a permanent fixture on the Electric Soul Show. Over the last 3 weeks we have heard the tracks called "Can't have my love" and Run 2 you" on the show. This week I was pleased to announce that he had just created a new track. "Anything"(2008 release) by BA NUSANCE.

I love this track. I really do. BA NUSANCE shows his versatility here. Armed with just a guitar, and his voice he delivers (Ascoutic sounding HipHop Music here!). In fact the he is rapping on and over the musical grooves of this track. He is eventually joined by other background vocalists that offer great Harmonising support on this tune that in my opinion strengthens the track. He has done it again in my opinion. In fact its one of my favourite tracks that I have received from him. You can hear and find out more from BA NUSANCE by going to his website

The next track that I dropped on the show was also from another up and coming artist/s. The track in question is called "The Man I love" (2007) by Worldwide Groove Corporation (Nashville, Usa) featuring Ingrid Dumosh. I came about this track after surfing around on the Internet one day with no particular aim at the time in finding out or looking for anything of interest. I was lucky enough to come across the single mention above during this "surfing". Sounds very downtime. Chill out music in fact. But it had something about it for me. It sounded very 1960ish; in fact it sounded like a film score, but a very good film score type song. A song that you could imagine being in the new (James Bond movie - Quantum of Solace, 2008, but it isn't) for instance . It starts off with you, the listener thinking that you are in some meeting or large event. Then the 60'ish like vocalist (Ingrid Dumosh) comes to the fore. Her vocals are very clear and soothing at the same time. The music accompanying Ingrid voice is very trip hip hopish, if I can make any comparison. I like this as soon as I heard this. But each man and women to their own. Check out their myspace page below

Time has been reached now that would allow me to introduce the first part of the Rare Groove Selection part 1.Each week I play 2 parts. In each part there are 3 songs in each part. However, I will not divulge each part to you very reading this. You need to listen to the show!

After I had played Rare Groove Selection Part 1. I decided on changing the flavours of the show. I went along the route of dropping two Soulful House tracks. The first one being "Going through the motions" by Keisha Jenkins and Blaze (both from New Jersey, USA) (1993). A really nice Jazzy, Soulful house classic that allowed Keisha Jenkins to bellow out that fantastic, yet gospel tinged voice of hers over this groove. You'll either get caught up on the groove of this track which is fantastic; or her voice, or both if you like me. A classic House track from back in the day.

The other Soulful House track does what it says on the tin. It is Soulful. Boy is it Soulful, and yet it has a simple House rhythm that you can't but help like. "Hold on" by Romanthony (New Jersey, USA, 1999) is a good track. In fact its a great track. One that got missed due to the music industry fascination with the UK Garage music scene that was in full follow during that period of time within the House music world. It starts off with a series of sampled speeches which are looped into this track that helps tune. Then "that" voice comes over this simple House groove. I simple love this track. The vocals are so spot on for this type of music. To me this is how House music can be. One tune that I'm glad that I dug out from my "vaults" to play for the listeners of the Electric Soul Show.

The next track dropped on the show was "Never give you up" by Raphael Saddiq featuring CJ Hilton and Stevie Wonder (2008). Played this a few times now over the last 2/3 weeks, and it still sounds great. It seems as if Raphael Saddiq has found a "time machine" and gone back to the year of 1968, and created this Soul music cut. Its so retro. Its such a Motown or Staxx records sounding type of record that you might finding yourselves rubbing your ears in order to believe that you are hearing something that was made in 2008, instead of 1968! However, its quality. Raphael has come up trumps with this track, which in my opinion is easily the best track on the recently released album called "The way it is" (September, 2008).

Time was going against me here as I looked up at the clock within the studio. 13 minutes left. It was then that I introduced and played out the final 3 songs on the Show. Yes it was part 2 of the Rare groove selection.(*Once again I'm not going to give you details of these 3 songs. You will have to listen to the show to find out what these were. Try listening next week!)

Well, that was it from me this week. Now back home to find out more about Barack Obama, and that amazing election result from the USA...
